When shifting into drive, either from Park or Reverse, there is at times a delay in getting the truck to begin moving. This does not happen every time, but seems to be when the truck has sat for a longer time. The transmission seems to be working fine at all other times, but I cannot figure out what would be causing this delay. If I press the gas, everything kicks in and all is OK. There are no strange sounds or grinding. Any help would be appreciated.

Drop the pan & clean the filter / flush the fluid.
Check the throttle valve cable.

i got a transmission flush about 3000 miles ago, should i still go ahead and try this or does anyone else have any other ideas

if your fluid levels are good,
i think its your rear outer seals leaking gear oil.

Does this happen more in cold weather?

Does this happen in the morning when the truck
has been sitting for a long time?

or after sitting a while during work?

My sister had the outer seals on rear wheels leak
gear oil on the rear brake shoes and it caused the
brake shoes to stick.

One time they acted up after a snow storm
and one rear wheel was turning and the other was
stuck. Freaky when you start driving in circles.

i had a new outer seal put on the left side and the right side is fine. It does happen more when it is cold and it usually happens in the morning and after the truck has been sitting for over 4 hours. i checked the seals again and there is no oil leaking from the brake drums or anything like that.

there is thick grease when you take off the drum and look more towards the center i think it might be bearings. It usually smells on the right side alot after i drive it any distance do you think that might be it and what makes it smell

I had this same situation happing on my 1997 with only 85K on it. I was the transmission. I endup having to have it rebuilt and $2500 later it runs great.

Did you notice this change after doing the flush or was it there before? Nicole told me that often times a flush if the fluid was really bad can kick up more shizzy and create more problems, and so you need to do like 4 flushes within about a week to trully get all the crap out...

it just started acting up this week and after the flush it drove perfect so i dont know what sparked this. Im starting to get worried though because i thought toyotas were sound. and now the tranny could be going bad

Have you ever pulled the pan and cleaned the filter screen?
You might want to if you haven't done so.

could someone give me directions to pulling the pan and cleaning the filter because im not quit sure where everything is located and how it is all done. I am new at this and want to learn as much as possible. Can anyone tell me what the smell is in the rear tire the brakes are new the seals are fine, i think its the bearings does that make sense?

what is the "grease"?

The symptons are identical to what happened for us, still sounds exactly like the rear axle seal.

Once the truck is warmed up, it will shift fine until you let it sit for a while.

For us the dealership was not sure until we left it overnight and
they checked it out cold.

One thing you could try, not 100% if it is a good diagnositic.

Park the truck on level ground for the night.
Put wheel chocks on the front wheels so it wont roll.

In the morning jack up the rear wheels and put the truck in
neutral.

See if the wheels can turn, both forward and reverse.

well its in toyotas hands now dropped it off a few hours ago

toyota just called does this sound right inner and outer real axle seals the grease got all over the drums and rotors and all need to be replaced. total 1400 dollars

1400 bucks? sounds like alot even for both wheels.
not just one side.

I dont see why they would need to replace the drum,
couldn't they just clean it?

I am assuming you have rear drums.

I would get some more estimates, maybe with
an independant shop, so you could go with aftermarket
parts.
