Tune Up for a 96 Toyota 4-Runner
I was wondering what would be the proper procedure for a MAJOR tune - up on a 96 4Runner 3.4LV6. I am also wondering what are the best spark plugs to use? Any suggestions?

Hi Courtney,
Visit the "Maintenance" forum. There's a link at the top that takes you to a site where you can find out, by year, model, and mileage, the maintenance items that you need to do for your vehicle.
Re spark plugs: most of us prefer OEM spark plugs.

You could at least start with this:
Tune up would entail:
Air filter
Fuel filter
OEM plugs
clean throttle body
clean MAF sensor
Other items that may help:
grease chassis (I also like to grease the driveshafts.....don't overfill driveshafts)
Valves have shims, but are very difficult to do! (I would advise not to)
Adjust for proper tire pressure.

I would also recommend, depending on the miles on your rig...check your 02 sensor, that thing has caused me some serious problems before. But once you replace it...its home free from there.
Also, if you're going to do the plugs, might as well just go ahead and do the whole shabang...cap and rotor can be done and wires too but I doubt the wires will need much attention.
Hope that helps,
Fink
