Third member removal/replacement

I have a thread on this already but my problems different, this weekend im looking at taking my third member out to see the bearings, i would rather go to pick n pull and just take a whole third member and replace the whole unit, which way would be easier? Could anybody give me some insight on this and what precautions i should take? Thanks

Gotta match gears. 8" is an 8" other than that.

Did 5spds and autos have different gear ratios, which would be easier, replacing the whole third member or looking for the problem inside the third member, money is not an issue, im just tryin to see if there are any special tools i will need or special sequences in which this should be done

i got another question, i went to look at some third members today, luckily i found about 5 of them, also found a 90 4runner 3vze with 732000km's!! i was shocked it is in good shape too, ANYWAYS i took the drain plug off of 2 axles and nothing has come out, is it bad idea to take one? or do junk yards drain the axles too?

most junkyard to drain all oil from vehicle, they can get fined if you just letit drain into ground, as for getting correct gear ratio check inside drivers door for axle code once you find out yours just match it up with one at junkyard

ok im just about to go rip my car truck apart, but before i did i decoded my axle code, my truck was installed with a 22re differential 4.875 ratio with 31" tire option but the differential that i have to replace it is the v6 4.556 ratio differential for the 31" tire option. my truck is a v6, i understand the ratios arent the same but shouldnt this differential still be better and still work for me? is my speedometer going to read inaccurate if i install this?

why do you want to go in and inspect your bearings anyways - is there a problem?

sounds like you have the prized 4.88s in your rig since you've got a 4runner with v6/auto that came with 31s. personally, I would NOT swap those out for a higher gearing unless you had extra power from a 3.4L or other motor swap to move your rig around. the gear ratio you have now is technically "better" for you, but if you do swap the in the 4.56s you will also need to do the front diff if you want to use 4wd again. if you go to larger tires in the future the next step up would be 5.29 gearing since you've got the auto. if you want to swap the diffs, find another 4.88 diff (G144 axle code)

read up on gearing here on YT, there is PLENTY of info.

then i would recommend you skip the junk yard and either buy a fully set up diff from a reputable shop, like Marlin Crawler, NWOR, Just Differentials, or similar vendor; or take your rig/diff to a local gear shop and have them freshen up your current diff with new bearings, solid pinion spacer, and seals.

i dont understand why it says on the decoding table that the g144 is a 22re differential, does this matter? my problem is the entire truck vibrates violently from 40-120 km/h only when any throttle is applied and when i shift into gear i hear a very loud clunk from the back, the transmission shifts fine so i ruled that out, ive been told to check my pinion bearing, but i wanted to just swap out the whole third member, but by the sounds of it i should keep my current third member. money is not an issue but i would rather do this myself and im not upgrading this third member if im going to replace the whole axle assembly down the road
