Hey guys I hope I've come to the right place for a question like this. A coworker has this extremely nice 1980 Toyota 4x4 that his father purchased new in 1980 and has only seen 1 winter. There are 17,484 original miles on it. This is not a restoration. The question is.. What is this truck worth? It is very rarely driven and takes up garage space. The original tail gate is shown in the bed wrapped and boxed. All original books and even sales receipt are still in tact. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

Very clean but with a 5 digit odometer on the 81 and earlier trucks it is hard to verify the mileage.lots of stuff leaking under there...I think is has way more than 17 k on it...
If it has the L43 side shifter transmission it is a weak link...

Yeah I'd definitely call that 117,000 miles. It's a really nice truck, but the looks of it. A lot of times original trucks from that era are sold on ebay. You could search to see what they've been going for.

Like Wabbit said, it's only worth real money to a Toyota freak. Otherwise, no more than $2-3,000. But there's somebody out there willing to pay a LOT more than that.

Im going to have to go with 117k too... it has some underbody pitment to it. a 17k mile vehicle would be absolutely spotless under there. my 1967 mustang has "30k" miles on it according to the odometer and it has about as much pitment as that does. Granted its been in california its entire life... but even with 117k its still work money!

I am going to go with Suncomb1 on the truck. The truck has been repainted at some time as it looks to be a 2 stage paint job rather than the original single stage. Under hood stickers aren't shown, but if missing is a clear indicator of a paint job as well. The paint on the undercarriage shows wear and there are many leaks from the running gear and motor. The odometer on the 1980 turns back to zero every hundred thousand miles. 117K is conservative, more than likely at least 217K. I have a 1982 Toyota 2WD with less than 100K, garaged it's entire life and it still doesn't have any leaks. My Trekker is 130K original and it doesn't have leaks like this truck either. Unfortunately pre 1981 Toyota trucks can not be run through car fax to verify mileage which causes many people to commit fraud, knowingly or not, on these older trucks. Although it is a very attractive truck, it is not being represented to to you truthfully if you are being told 17K original miles. There are plenty of Toyota illiterate suckers on Ebay though.

Wow, .........all that above sounds about right... but still nice! This is the 83 SR5 Long bed I bought in 97, with Original paint, 38K miles when I bought it, had all service records, ..... NOT A SPOT of rust nor single leak! >>>> 1700$ at the time..........>>>



You could EAT off the undercarriage... And like Mak said, it was a CA truck, ..but even at more than double the miles, and plenty of humidity and winters... it never had that kind of rust or leakage.

Still... I LIKE IT! haha.

Hmmm... My 87 4Runner has been on concrete for 10 years.... I don't see any rust under there at all(TINY bits on a couple bolts). I'm not sayin you're fibbin... Sounds like something maybe Lye would cause over time. But it's just never happened to me that I can think of, .......after around 20 vehicles having been stored on Concrete Garage floors. Of course... some of them were coated... Which we did to prevent OIL leakin through/easy clean ups. Even painted one with Freeway Paint. Hmmm.

I don't see anything suspect about his name. Anyways, we'll see what he comes back and says about all this, if he ever does come back. I'm not going make a judgement until he's had a chance to give some more info, after seeing all these posts.

But I'll agree that people who join the site just for a "what's it worth" or a "for sale" are going to be eyed a little more suspiciously.

I'm sorry if this first post seemed a little odd or misleading. This forum is obviously not my area to be in. The subaru and supermoto forums are my home. I was just trying to help a fellow coworker out and guide him in the right direction with his dads truck as he has no computer access or internet. I can see where the mileage is an issue with the 5 digit odometer but this is the info that was presented to me and I passed it along to you guys for input. I guess this thread can be closed now because none of this info seemed to help. Thanks anyway..

I think the info posted in the replies helped. People with a lot of Toyota experience pointed out several things they noticed. Not 17k original with the amount of wetness underneath, but nonetheless definitely a nice truck. It would take an in person look and lots of explaining to convince me it has only 17k. Looks like it was babied for 117k. I think it's worth $5-6k to the right buyer.

i think your coworkers best bet would be to as mentioned before, try ebay. Put the reserve(minimum) at whatever the seller feels comfortable letting it go for. It has the potential to go for quite a bit. realistically with out seeing the vehicle up close and personal it is hard to judge just what it might be worth.
It is definitely a clean truck on the outside and the interior, just the underside pics shows me that it needs a minimum of a new front wipers around the knuckle ball and it looke the front crankshaft seal could be leaking...
things a knowledgeable buyer are going to inspect right off would be the four inner cab corners, rust tends to do a lot of damage there...

a lot of the value of the truck depends on where the truck is located...In California...these trucks are everywhere...in the Northeast it would probably have a line up of buyers.

1. BS on 17k original miles. I'd be suspicious even if there were a leading 0, but there isn't.

2. It's very nice regardless. From what I've seen around here (Norcal), 2-3k easy, maybe more like 5k.

3. It's so old that most of its wear would not only be due to age and not mileage, but would actually be worse for lack of use. Rubber doesn't like to sit loaded in one way for years on end; it needs to move around and eventually be replaced no matter how you use it. That makes it (assuming the truth of such low mileage) valuable only as a museum piece for curiosity, not as something in actual good running condition. Case in point: front spring sag is just as bad as on my two '81s, which both have well over 200k.

4. Which it appears to be, but I agree that the paint and appearance of the chassis indicate that it was redone (fairly well, it seems) at some point.

Hello everyone, I am the new owner of this rig. Just got back yesterday from Fond Du Lac, WI (where I picked it up from). Did some googling, and found this thread. Obviously, I just signed up. I was also VERY skeptical about the mileage and originality. You have to see this thing to believe it! It is absolutely original, both body and miles. When I examined this beaut, all signs confirmed the owners story. However, I am a tech not a body specialist. I took it took a well known body shop (Waukegan Auto Body). Had the owner of the shop (Tom) look it over. He was absolutely amazed. He says it is 90% original (paint and all). Only some repaint on the fenders (very good job). NO bondo! you can even see the factory rivets/spot welds. The under body was undercoated by Toyota in 1982 (have reciept). The only thing I did not like was the leak from the rear main. The gentlemen I bought it from kept it in his beautiful garage since his father passed. It was kept alongside to other mint vehicles (Honda s2000 and a Mini Cooper). Also, to those that say the stickers under the hood have been removed/painted over, that's incorrect. The stickers are present on the top where they were placed by toyota. Plate still riveted on the side with no paint. Not one bolt, screw, stud, has ANY paint. I will be more than happy to post requested pics. I completely understand where you all are coming from, but you have to see it to believe it!
