22re or 22rec, engine swapped.

Hi

I'm trying to figure if my engine is a 22re or a 22rec.
All I know is that it's supposed to come from a 4runner, don't know exact year. Maybee 88 or 89.
I know the injectors are Type-E as I have changed them.
Type-E injectors looks like they only came in 88 models.

What's the difference between a 22re and 22rec ?
Things I can look for to know my engine ?

ok so it should be fairly easy to tell, the first thing you want to do is check the vin number plate, it will say federal or california, thats for the CPU. but a 22rec motor will have ALOT more emmisions, extra ports for tubing and sensors. there is a emissions diagram in one of the posts which you can see the difference, or google it.
I hope this helps, if your still stuck let me know

Checking the vin plate won't help, the engine i swapped. Used to be a 3Y there.
Are you saying the cpu's are different too ?
Guess I'll have to google the emission diagram to find out which one I have.

ya the CPU's are different because it is mean to handle all the extra and different sensors to stay within the emissions code, did you find that diagram. if not I'll send it to you

Total newbie, this might be a dumb question but hey! apparently there are no dumb questions! I'm trying to order filters from NAPA for my 87 4runner with a 22RE. Their website and parts guy only has part numbers for the 22REC engine. Would there be a difference in the filters between the two engines?

You can get all OEM filters from toyotapartsexpress.com, cheaper than dealer prices and tax free.

22RE and 22RE-C uses all the same filters n such, it's just more sensors and vacuum hoses to deal with.

SCToy, thanks for the help! My buddy is ordering parts for me through his work so I am getting a good deal, also I'm in canada so I have to pay brokerage fees for shipping north. OEM does sound good though... I'll take a look. I'm pretty new to buying an old rig and doing all the work on it myself as I plan with this one. It has 260,xxx k's on it and its in pretty good shape. I bought it off a dealer so I know absolutely nothing about its maintenance history. I want to start off right with full fluid and filter change etc. What else would you recommend I do besides oil, fuel, coolant, tranny, diffs, and t-case? Should I be looking into replacing parts of the front end like ball joints? Let me know if I am posting this in the wrong spot...
