wiper linkage bushing

well my wiper linkage bushing broke into pieces on the motor side> priced it from toyot its about $260.00. i went to the wrecking yard but all the plastic seems to be brittle so i said screw it. I dont know why toyota doesnt sell the bushings. anyways i decided to make my own linkage i used a piece of 1/2 steel tubing and got 2 5/16 heim joints, i bent the tubing to match the factory piece and welded nuts to the end of the tubing and threaded the heims in, works like a charm and only cost me $15.00. i did have to grind the factory pivot balls off the arms, i ground were they are riveted to the arm then used a punch to drive them out, used 5/16 bolts to hold the heims

Great job on that linkage!

Hi,

I'm having the same exact problem. The dumb thing just snapped off. Why don't they make these out of metal? Gah.

So, did you make some sort of socket type of thing that the pivot arm sat in? I didn't really get a good look at the thing before it snapped to pieces.

Thanks

Let us know if they work, my wipers are clicking and the bushings look to be very loose right now.

Thanks,

Mike

Ya, I got them in. I'm not sure if they're going to work yet though. They might be too small. I'm not 100% sure how the bushings are supposed to connect to be honest. You get about 4 bushings with heads on them and one bushing w/out a head. Not sure if the one w/out a head is supposed to go in the one with a head or what.

If I figure it out, I'll post back here.

later,
george

Hey man,

So I'm thinking it's a no go for those bushings. Don't seem to work too well. Not sure if they're the wrong size or what, but they're a real pain to get on and they don't stay on once you get em on.

So, I'm going to Plan B. Picked up a copper piece at home depot. It's kinda like a copper pipe that widens at the end. Widens into a screw. I think the widened part of the piece will fit into the wiper arm and then the copper pipe piece fits nicely onto the ball joint on the wiper motor. All I'll need to do then is crimp the copper piping around the ball joint and hope for the best. Will report back if this scheme pans out.

the ball that the bushings snapped over, i just used a grinder and cut them off, then took a 5/16 bolt and groung the head almost flush to clear the other linkage arms, used a couple washers under the heim put some thread lock ont the bolt and was done. yeah i know the junkyards have cheap wiper transmissions, but they too had stress fractures forming in the plastic so its only a matter of time before they cracked. plus i live in the 120 degree desert so plastic doesnt last out here.

Ya, I just used a piece of copper piping. Put it over the ball socket. Pinched one end down around the ball and cut 3 slits in the other side. Then I put the copper piping into the arm and pulled the 3 slits out so it stays within the arm. Worked like a charm. (a little noisy, but I can deal) kinda looks like this: 3=

the = sign being the unmolested copper piece that's wrapped around the ball and the 3 being the slits of copper that were pulled out so that it stays within the wiper arm. Not sure if that makes sense, to anyone but me.
