I'm the proud owner of a 1992 pickup, 4x4 with the v6, but i've got this noise thats driving me nuts and i can't pinpoint it! It sounds like it's coming from the front wheel hubs. In fact, it sounds exactly like dragging brake pads, but i have brand new ceramic pads with anti squeal applied liberally to everything and there is no change to the noise when the brakes are applied. I have the ADD hubs, all joints are brand new, and if i lift either front wheel and spin it i can hear it. It's for sure not the wheel bearings, since i thought it was that and replaced them. Doesnt sound like it's coming from the differential, just seems to be coming from the brakes / hub area. Sort of a metallic dragging sound, not super loud, but that increases with speed and is very noticeable around 20mph. Any ideas? Please, this is driving me CRAZY!

I had a noise simular to that. I had mistaken it for the hubs too, it turned out to be the speedo cable. Easy way to test it is unplug it from the tranny and tie wrap it somewhere stable underneath, then go for a spin.

If that is it, they sell a little tube of speedo lube at any auto parts store just for that.

That's a great tip, i've heard that that happens a lot, but the 1992s have an electronic speed sensor (no speedometer cable). It's for SURE coming from the hub area, i know because i jack up one of the wheels, put my head under the front of the truck (CAREFULLY ) and when i spin the wheel, i hear it coming from there only.

I would doudle check the brake pads. Try pulling the caliper off and see if it still makes the same noise. Is it lifted?

when the noise starts press the brake pedal lightly, if it changes or stops it is probley in the brakes.

just a quick fix, and it's in the general vicinity, could it be your power steering gear? When the fluid gets low it'll make an incredibly obnoxious squeal... if you're low, just top it off and start checking for leaks.

hunter4runner is right I had the same noise and thats what it was you need to make a spindle lubricator you can find directions in thread for spindle lubricator

x3 on spindle lubricator, even if thats not your noise its probably due for a lube and will save you some grief on a crazy noise in the future.... awesome writeup by an old tech on here how to do it.

Doesn't really sound like it to me though, when my spindles went the noise/vibration would start and then stop after maybe 10 or 15 seconds, although that was in -40 so that might have been affecting mine before it was really bad and squealing all the time.

Get your tires balance recently? I got some boggers balanced at a reputable offroad shop saying it was a must and after the first chew the weights came off and got lodged in my calipers, howled something fierce.

How hard was it to compress your calipers for the new pads? Jack it up and have someone hold the break pedal and see if you can still spin the tires. If one spins and the other doesn't, chances are you have a seized caliper. Went down that road about 2 months ago.

Removed the pads, sounds like they were dragging quite a bit. This strikes me as weird, as the sound does NOT change at all when i use the brakes, the pads only have about 2000 miles on them, they're the nice ceramic type, and i lubed the heck out of the calipers, pins, etc when i put them on. Does this sound right to anyone else? Also, before you ask, the rotors seem fine, and no vibration at all even under heavy braking.

Telling you the spindle bushings.Follow the link and make the tool,shoot them with grease and see if the sound goes away.Both my trucks were squeling,One I added the updated bearingnand one I just shot them with grease.

check the brake sheild behind the rotor. sometimes when installing wheels these can get bent in to the rotor and cause a slight noise like you where talking about. always go simple first! good luck!

Well, it's DEFINITELY the pads. I removed the ADD plate and it still made the noise when spinning. Took the pads out and it completely stopped. Cleaned and lubed the perfectly good pins, shims, and backing plates, reinstalled, and i can still hear the noise coming directly from the pads. I've never had this happen before, especially with newer pads. Experiences anyone?

The last auto parts store i went to said that the toyota rotors can't be turned because they're too tough? Didnt seem right to me, but i didnt want to buy brand new rotors at the moment. Does this seem right?

lmao. okay, that parts store, don't go there anymore. obviously they're trying to sell more than actually help. the rotors can and should be turned anytime you replace pads. it's a chore because you have to remove the rotor, but you can leave the hub on. remove the wheel bearings, leave the races and clean the grease out(lot easier to do before it full of metal filings) and take it to anywhere that turns rotors.

Isn't there some spring/clip thing that forces the pads in a v6 caliper apart? Called an anti-rattle clip iirc. Haven't seen OP mention it at all.
