I noticed the power steering fluid was low on my 4runner so I started looking around and found that it seeping out on the drivers side bellow of the steering rack.

I looked in the Toyota service manual and it shows the rack disassemble and reassembly steps and diagrams and it doesn't look too complicated.

As far as the parts go I've found Gates makes an entire reseal kit for $40 bucks #348469

I know I could just get one from a junkyard but how long before it has the same problems and I don't know how much abuse it was given.

So I've decided to rebuild it, I'm just curious if anyone else has rebuilt or tried to rebuild one??

Looks like the best way to go is to buy a new Toyota OEM rack which runs about $650 wholesale and a set of Tie Rod ends for $50 bucks each.

I know Ebay is not usually on the up and up, but does anyone have any experience with the rebuild services like this one?

Shows that they rebuild your existing steering rack with 48 hour turn around, anybody know if it's worth it? Quality?

From reading around the net, the steering racks on the 4runners were not designed with rebuilding in mind and when they start to leak it means METAL parts have worn out of tolerance causing slop which tears the seals.

I found on a couple of other Toyota message boards where people have tried the Ebay rebuilt steering racks and had nothing but headaches.

With something as critical as steering I think I'll spend the $700 bucks and not risk it.

Good to know. I have a few drips here and there so I know this is in my future depending on how long I can milk it, I guess OEM is the way to go.

My mistake, they sell the rack gear for 200, the entire assembly is 700. If you think your going to keep the truck for a while pony up the 700 and fix it right. Rule #1 in the zen of car maintenance is never skimp on brakes, tires and steering.

To get the rack out of the housing requires special tools. Also the damage that normally causes the assembly to leak is caused by damage to the bushings and housing. So the only real solution is to replace the whole assembly.

I'm about to rebuild the rack in my '97. It is perfectly fine to rebuild these racks although it is a PITA. If you do rebuild it, make sure you also replace the drivers side rack guide roller along with all the seals and bushings. Toyota sells or used to sell a rebuild kit and the rebuild procedure is in the FSM.

Yea but for the cost and trouble its just easier for most of us to buy a new one from Toyota for $700.

If you want to piss away $400, be my guest. Also, unless you get a heavy discount at the dealer its closer to $900 IIRC.

I would at least check with some local shops to see what they offer. Here in metro Denver there is an outfit (Colorado Power Steering I believe it is) that sells the rack for around $400 and the install for around $150. The guarantee is anywhere from 1-3 years I believe you just pay a slight bit more for longer peace of mind.

Talking to someone who does this every day for a living is a great way to learn what all your options are before you pony up that kind of money. And while you are at it consider the poly bushings to improve the overall feel they are not that much money at all.

Im tackling the same problem this week. my is so bad i lost my power steering all together. found a used rack at the junk yard for $75. how big of a job is it to replace? never tackled one before.

I own a 2000 4runner with SS 1.2 and BFG 255/85 km2's. This year I have put in 3 Carquest after market racks and 1 oem and tonite I climbed under it after returning from bear hunting and noticed the thing is leaking again. I felt some play on the trail into my treestand and felt some sway/role on the highway. I dont' do any real hard wheeling and I don't think the KM2's are so oversized to stress out the rack. I'm not quite sure where to go from here. another OEM?
