Adding the aftermarket Trans cooler
#61
Depending on the size of cooler you get, your cost will be around $50 and up. I and a lot of others got extra cooler hose because the 5ft or so that comes with the kit is either just barely enough or not enough depending on your choice of routing. So I'd say another $10-20 for hose. I bought 8ft and used almost all of it and used none of the 5ft that came with the cooler. Other than that you might need some extra clamps or bolts/nuts, nothing too expensive. I installed a filter as well so that cost another $30 or so.

b&m 70264 is bout 75 off of ebay shipped (and thats a "kit") and then synthetic fluid is about 7 bucks a quart and if you ad the tranny cooler and drain the tranny at the same time then you would need at most 6 quarts so around 120 bucks plus time to have it put in is what i would say at least thats what im speending
And FYI: AMAZON.COM: B&M 70264 for $59 + FREE SUPER SAVER SHIPPING. Got mine today.

i got the b&m 70264 one on amazon for 59bux and it does come with all the mounting stuff and hose. fyi. haven't installed mine yet but am going to asap. had a ?. i bought 6ft of 3/8" tranny hose from auto parts store. if its not enough cough i use the hose that came with the kit but it seems to be a tad smaller than the 3/8" hose i bought. so if i were a few feet short would smaller hose be ok to use?

okay guys I think I understand everything-but if the radiator lets go from within (after the external cooler already installed) and is already capped off properly from the auto tranny lines- then the only concern is the radiator itself correct? It can't damage the tranny -and could be replaced without affecting the tranny in any way right?
And to follow that train of thought -is an auto tranny radiator still needed then? Would a 5 speed radiator save any money or just complicate matters?

Nope, it could be a 5 speed radiator if you can find one.

Good thought Ron. Since it comes without the internal tranny cooler, the 5 spd radiator would not only work, but I would think it would be cheaper too.
On the stock auto radiator, once it's bypassed and capped off, even if it did rupture inside (after the fact) the only thing that could happen is you would lose a little coolant because some would find it's way into the tranny cooler. I don't think you'd ever know for sure that it ruptured unless you un-capped it and coolant spilled out, but as long as you topped off the coolant again, it probably wouldn't hurt anything to keep running like that.

thanks brian-looking to save my lady friend any money we can... it made sense to me but I have a habit of oversimplifying so had to check with the 'perts....
To me this ounce of prevention sure makes sense for anyone with an auto tranny.

As my transmission fluid is looking/smelling old and a little burned, I plan to flush my transmission before I install the new cooler. I'm going to be using Castrol Dextron VI, which is some darn pricey stuff when you're talking 16 qts. I called around locally (including a bulk oil supplier, who didn't carry it) and looked online, but the best price I was seeing was still $6.99/qt.
I came across a promotion over at Advance Auto for 15% off of an order over $100, plus free shipping. The promotion says motor oil must be picked up in-store, but it let me ship the ATF to my house, saving me a trip across town. If you're planning on an ATF flush, you can at least save a little cash if you use the offer, which ends after today (19 May 2010). I don't know where Dextron VI can be had much cheaper, though someone will probably chime in any time now.
I also picked up some RhinoRamp 12000's for $34 after a sale and the additional 15% off and free shipping to my house.

Been reading about the "Strawberry Milkshake" so I am also getting nervous!. '98 4runner 3.4 auto tranny, 156K on the engine/tranny but had 122K on it 3 years ago when I purchased. The radiator had been replaced by previous owner for who knows what reason before I bought it so it still looks new. CARFAX did not mention anything about any replacement/engine/transmission issues.
I am wanting to do the tranny cooler radiator bypass and contemplating the Tru-Cool. So MtG, noted your configuration, interested in the fan you used, how did you mount it, what type fan is it, connection to the radiator, hook up of power, temp sensor mounting, how much was the fan and where did you procure it?
I checked out the TRD tranny cooler and how it mounts to the lower portion of the radiator making it's location very low and would work for my application as I installed replacement horns from a Lincoln Continental (two sets by the way!) so clearance in a vertical location or higher in the grill area would not work very well for me. The mounting hardware for the TRD seems to be ideal and that would seem to be where some of the added expense comes into play.
My biggest concern for cooling either the TRD or the TRU-Cool would be in an auxillary cooling fan. I am running the Taurus Electric fan mod with the temp setting at 183 degrees. My fan rarely turns on at that setting unless its really warm out and I happen to get into stop and go traffic. Should I mount a seperate electric fan for the tranny cooler?
Thanks again for so much information on this issue that doesn't seem to be addressed by Toyota. Failure of the radiator should not result in other major equipment failures ...
Very interesting information about the failure of the radiator/transmission cooler.
