Popping out of 1st gear

1990 4Runner M/T

Well my truck is popping out of first gear. I Just got the truck, no idea how long it has been happening. It only happens in first gear. All other gears seem fine.

Any ideas what could be causing it? Clutch or transmission?

Try replacing the shift lever bushing.

If that doesn't fix it, then you're going to have to split it.

I don't know what the shift lever bushing is. I did a keyword search through the FSM and it did not come up. I didn't see it listed on the diagrams I looked at. Can you provide some more info on where it is?

Yupp there you go. It's the softer lower bushing that tends to fall apart.

Thanks I'll look into that as soon as my wife lets me spend more time on it. I spent all of today cleaning it. I took out the seats and even that whole center part around the shifters. Cleaned up about a box worth of Cheerios and about $3 in change. I could have replaced it today had I posted this earlier. Oh well.

trany poping out of gear

Not sure exactly what caused it, but about a year ago mine was poping out of gear in third and very hard to shift. I had the trany oil changed. I had them put Lucas in instead of the regular oil. I had heard this stuff can fix any trany, even automatic. Well, after driving a couple of days it shifted so much easier and hasn't poped out of gear again. Hope this helps. Cindy

Problem Solved -- so far

Well I picked up a Bushing, Shift Lever and Seat, Shift Lever for a total of about $20. Took out the old ones. I did not see any problems with the old ones. I put in the new ones, took about 20 minutes. The new ones went on just fine. I dove it around a bit.

I did notice each gear wiggled a little less. It was also easier to shift into each gear. 1st gear did not pop out at all.

Easy fix. $20 is well worth it to not have to fight when shifting gears.

These guys have the the shifter seats and the bushings. I just did both of these in mine and they work really well. They are not very expensive and easy to replace. http://www.marlincrawler.com/catalog/70/parts_upgrades

So my buddy's 4runner is popping out of 1st, but only when she is shifting from Reverse to 1st, would this be the shifter bushing too?

After changing the bushing it did still pop out of first gear so it did not solve my problem. But then I sold the truck on saturday. That did solve the problem.

i own a 1991 2wd toyota pickup 265,000 miles on it now. ever since i got it 40,000 miles ago it has popped out of first gear every now and again. usually when the transmission is holding back. what i allways figured it was a bad synchronizer but i have just ignored it. it hasnt gotten any worse and it dosnt do it in any other gears. if u figure any thing else out let me know.

My buddy had the opposite problem this morning - it popped into gear and then ran into his garage door and folded it like an accordion.

That had no relevance...but at least that hasn't happened to any of you!

Either the shift fork is worn, (known weakness) or the synchros are shot. Dealing with the same problem myself. Fork is about $60.00, synchros are about $35.00 ea. Don't know how hare they are to replace, but I'm going to find out!

Ok so here is what I am seeing... You go to pull away from a stop sign, you have it in first and you start to let the clutch out and just as the trucks start rolling and you feel you can safley add throttel and easy off the clutch... then it happens WAM pops out of first.... try this HOLD the shift lever in first while taking off??? then try removing hand at speed in first and let off the throttle... dose it stay in first till you add ppower again?
If it dose your main bearing in the intermedete plate in the transmission is shot. first gear is the furthest from the bearing so it gets the most leverage and binds up, mine used to do the same thing I drove 50,000 miles with it doing this, it dose get worse as time gose on. the fix I used marlin crawlers HD rebuild kit. since then no more holding the shifter in its place and smooth as butter.
Dont try to do the rebuild unless you have great gear pullers and a very large press!!!!
Good luck
If it were the synchros you wouldn't get it in first while the motor was running...
And I just dont see it being the shift fork if the above applies...
Let us know how it turns out

If it was the main, the tranny would be making noise. Mine's dead quiet, synchros can cause this problem, (one of the 1st things the FSM says to check), but I don't think that's my problem. Look on marlin's site @ the shift fork. The allum on the factory ones was apparently not heat treated correctly, & won't push the gear cluster far enuf to engage properly every time. If the cluster is in good shape, it will pull itself together under load. As the problem gets worse. expensive starts to get torn up. If you pay attention, you can tell when you shift into 1st that it didn't engage properly.

Mine does this once in a while. I often find that double-clutching while waiting at the light helps a lot. I can feel it engage better when I do.
