Put in EZ-Locker...now 4Runner bangs and will not steer....any advice? Please?
1985 Toyota 4runner, 250,000 miles, 22RE, Auto Trans, 4.35 geared
Ok, so I put in a Detroit EZ Locker into my 4runner. Everything went in pretty smooth. When I went for a test drive, the locker was working until I crawled over a huge boulder. The 4runner actually cleared the builder flawlessly...then I heard a loud bang and the 4runner shuddered back and forth going any further. I took the 4runner out of 4x4 with the hubs still locked. The banging stopped but the steering was way off...like I had no power steering. I had to really turn the wheel in order to make simple turns.
I unlocked the hubs and the steering is fine. If I shift into 4x4 (hi or lo) without the hubs locked...no banging and no problems steering. Only when the hubs are locked does it act really weird. Any thoughts, suggestions? I used only Toyota seals and torqued everything to spec when rebuilding. I am thinking my locker is screwed up.
Thanks for ANY suggestions. This board is awesome!

a locked front end tends to want to pull the way it wants to go. I run an Aussie up front and at the end of a day of wheeling my arms are tired.
I use a twin stick so that I can pop in and out of 4WD when I am binding up.
Did you do the set up yourself? If so did you do it correctly? Remember to put the thrush washers back in? I got lucky on my 1st Diff set up, I got the carrier bearings mixed up. Than I ended up following a write up on Zuk's site: http://gearinstalls.com/
to undo my mistakes...
but from the shuttering to described it sounds like you might have sheared a tooth on the ring gear...

Stupid question, but do i need to use the old thrust washers on the EZ locker if the locker was installed in the front diff? Would the absence of thrust washers cause the problems I am experiencing?
Thanks,

that is also a possibility...one reason I have a twin stick and Dirty 30's
Jared: did you do any hard turns in 4WD with the front wheels bound up that might lead you to do this to a birf?
If the instructions for the Detroit are like the Aussie than yes.
From what I understand a Detroit EZ locker is a typical lunchbox locker (http://www.offroaders.com/tech/detroit-ez-locker.htm).
Sometimes people forget to take the Thrust washers off the diff gears and put them on the locker..
can't say for sure this is your issue but offering a possibility

u dont need to be turning in a bind to blow them up, ive gernaded a few on soft dirt hills, and blew up one backing out of my driveway. after replacing 9 birfs in 3 months, i got longs with hub gears, now the outter hub gear breaks.

Thanks all for the responses. We'll find out when I tear it all apart next week. You are all referring to "longs". What are those? Longer axles? Where do I find them?
Thanks,
