How would all of you up grade your steering? I'm not talking about the steering wheel, column, or box, but everything else (rods, rod ends, arms, idler, bearings, etc?).

Is there an after market kit available for better performance or durability?

Is there a "Hy-steer" kit available for IFS trucks?

I drive a RHD so parts are hard to get. but I have seen a heavy duty idler arm and pittman arm for IFS so you dont bend them with 33" or 35" tires but since mine is RHD and the LHD has a different bend in it I cant use it. but im sure you could google it!

X2 bumping an old thread because I don't wanna be a re-poster. Got to do an entire steering rebuild after the winter, mine's almost toast, can't even get it aligned. So I am planning now.

So far the consensus is:

#1 the FA5040 Idler arm from Autozone. $36 LLT warranty.
#2 the Idler arm brace (IFS IDLER TRUSS N76810) from Northwest Off-Road. $ Need to call on price
#3 the Idler Arm Bushings (Pair) from SDORI $28.50

I just picked up a idler arm brace and new idler arm from northwest offroad. It was easy to install and really beefy. I've looked into the total chaos idler arm but it was a little expensive for me so i just got the brace.

The ifs steering system is already a hi-steer. the total chaos idler arm is nice, but very price (about 300 last time i checked) a brace and quality tierod ends will make for a good system. What kind of terrain does your truck see? if you dont wheel much and have the stock tires, you dont need a brace. but they are cheap insurance. good luck

Fresh tie rod ends will make a world of difference if you have sloppy steering. The big weak point is the idler arm, hence all the braces, etc, etc. I read nothing but bad things about the Ebay kits, so I did not go there. Those are the only total repalcement kits that I know of.

Also, Toyota did a recall on certain years for the relay rod, the long part that bridges across the front of the truck, all of the other parts connect to it. On the drag link side that part has failed while driving, a major liability issue. The new part is very beefy. Unfortunately my '89 V6 Runner does not qualify. I'm hoping to find one at the boneyard, since they replaced so many of them over the years under a recall.

Yup might be replacing that too, but mine is an 87 not an 89-95. So I should be good there. But everything under there with a ball joint/bushing is bad. Relay rod has no bushings/ball joint so it should be good to go. I wonder if the newer 89-95 relay rods even fit the 87.

Also doing some research on the idler arm and came up with 3 part numbers one of which fits the bronze bushings. one is listed for 92-95 FA5040 and the other 2 1986-1995 1739 and 1739e . I wonder why the FA5040 doesn't fit between 86-92 while the others do.

The bronze bushings only fit the FA5040. And the brackets from Northwest Off-road fit 86-95.

I double checked the fitments on O'reilly's and came up with the same thing.

Different years came with different sized shafts for the bushings.

For example, I've got several idler arms. One, out of an 87, has a narrow shaft with thick bushings. The other, out of a 92, has a much thicker shaft, with thin bushings.

BTW, already know all the jokes are coming. Lame.

Sort of.

The OD on the idler bushings appears to be the same, or at least on the ones I have.

However, they are only interchangeable if you swap a compatible arm as well, as in take an arm with the correct shaft diameter and put it into your current frame mount.

At that point, you've bought another idler, so you might as well just scrap your old one.

All idlers work for all year trucks.

BTW, idlers can be had for VERY cheap from people who have SAS'd their rigs.

yeah I plan on just buying another idler that 92-95 FA5040 just trying to make sure it will fit even though the product guide says it doesnt. And by arm are you talking about idler arm or pitman arm.

If you put a recalled and a replacement relay rod next to each other, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

The ones they put in after the recall are softer, and easier to bend, but (supposedly) won't break.

Just so I get this right the FA5040 for the "92-95" will fit the 87 without any problems right?

I am just hoping when I change all this over and I decide to go with power steering it wont affect anything on the "bottom" end of the build. Maybe just the pitman arm.
