1983 Toyota 4x4 truck question
Have a chance to buy an 83 4x4 pick up from a guy. It's in great shape -- 22R 4 banger, manual tranny. No luxuries.... my question, are they tough and rugged, or were these the aerly year Toyota's where they might have been "junk"? Any help would be appreciated.

They were built to last! Awesome trucks. Wish I had one to make stictly into a wheeler. 84 is when they went with square headlights I like them better!

They aren't junk at all unless they have been neglected. Ask about the timing chain tap on the frame and listen for rust. I know a few guys that have pre '84 trucks and wheel them hard. I have driven some and they are great fun.

Thanks fellas for the encouraging words. Actually, my older brother wants it more than I do so he is buying it. It's a 1 owner truck -- the paint on the body is sort of that orange'ish, red color with a nice white topper on the bed. The guy is selling it outright and then he is going to buy a new Xterra. :-( But, he sure did take care of it. Everything is still there and it all works! It rides like a lumber truck, but it sure does have a lot of pep. I'm way impressed with that 22R in line 4 cylinder. My brother is giving the guy $2800 for it.

Pre 79 had two round headlights on each side
79-81 had round headlights
82-83 had square headlights with the first gen body
84-88 had square headlights with the next gen squarer body
