Direction of coolant flow?

I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I am curious. Just poking around in the engine compartment earlier, I noticed that the top radiator hose was significantly warmer than the bottom one. Is this normal? what is the direction of the flow? No problems on the temp gauge, and both hoses have pressure. Just wanting to know. Thanks

Point of coolant is to do what?

So which hose would be coolest?

Top will be hotter as it is the return from the engine.
Bottom will be cooler as it supply the "cooled" coolant to the engine.

Radiator cools it via the fan and windflow.

Make sense?

Yeah, going from the top down and getting a gravity assist makes sense, too. I had just never really thought about it. I have been checking everything over really good lately on the Runner. My 8 year old daughter and I are planning to drive from Alabama to Colorado/Utah to see the country, camp everywhere, and visit some friends and family. Lots of driving; be gone about 4 weeks. Every little noise, perceived anomaly, etc. with the truck is something to be looked into. I have changed transmission fluid, gone to synthetic oil, flushed the radiator, and so on. I was pleased to see that the radiator was spotless inside. Thanks for the answer; one less thing to worry about.
