How do I tell if I have a "1/2 Ton" on "1 ton" truck?
I've come across this distinction when buying parts, but haven't seen it anywhere else.
I have a 1990 DLX pickup. 22RE, 4 wheel drive. Also, what does the DLX mean?

I work at kragen o'reilly (dont hate), i come across this all the time, matter of fact, every toyota owner in town seems to flock to me. but anywho, i believe it means deluxe, and i believe the one tone was a two wheel drive dually. Wait for some other input though, im not 100% on this.

If you look in our computers my old 91 was listed as "1991 SHT BD DLX EXT CB". Funny stuff eh? stands for 1991 short bed deluxe extra cab. crazyness, but still not as bad as honda, dx, ex, lx, hx, vp, si. or what about olds, calais, brougham, supreme. Or look at the new chevys and fords, fx4, lt, xlt, king ranch, silverado hd, silverado ss, silverado wt. its all a bunch of labeling crap to get more money out of us. i swear when it coms time to buy the mrs. a truck, its going to be an 89-95 pick-up or 4runner, her choice. new cars suck.

DLX = deluxe..
I used to own a 1ton..
it was a 2wd (not dually) with something like 3.93's and a 5speed..
it was a long bed 86...I think the 1 tons were only offered until 88 then in 89 with the body change the 1 ton option went out the window..

The true 1 ton pickup is an entirely made in Japan truck configured to meet USA DOT regulations. The vin will start out with a J to signify the Japan country of origin. The 1 ton 85 and 86 trucks have a vin that starts out JT4RN55xxxxxxxx. I don't know about any later years. I own an 85 and 86 1 ton. I bought the 85 new off the showroom floor in November 1984. Woe for the days of being able to buy a new HD truck for $7,550 including tax, title, plate, rust proof, chrome step bumper and dual side mirrors - out the door and down the road. Manual transmission, plain vinyl interior, no radio, power steering or A/C. Oh - the dealership also gave a new Commodor 64 computer in the deal. The computer had a new purchase value of $750 at the time.
The 1 ton is a 2 wheel drive truck. They were built with a 7ft Japanese box with liner panels. IFS front suspension. Front torsion bars are larger- I.I.R.C. - 22.5mm vs 20mm. Front sway bar is larger - 1". Rear springs are 5 leaf and lack the thick bar type leaf found on some applications. Rear axle housing is a heavy duty unit. The 1 ton has larger brakes on all wheels and different master cylinder/booster. Axle ratio is different from the std hilux. Rear brakes are equipped with load sensing proportioning valve. Rims are heavier duty. Engine was 22re/rec. Transmission was 5 speed manual or the automatic 3sp w/overdrive A43D. Stock tires are 185r14C 8ply. Bridgestone tires were OEM. Alternator is a 60amp. Front bumper is different but appears similar to the std hilux. I'm suspecting the bumper is a heavier duty unit to manage the low speed impact requirements when carrying rated load. Rated load was actually approximately 2500lbs which varied slightly with some into the 2600lb range.
In 1986 Toyota started supplying the RV manufacturers with full floating axles due to the manufacturers getting in trouble with the USA DOT for creating "fooley" or fake dual rim setups on the standard semi-floating axles which resulted in axle shafts and wheel studs breaking and loss of wheel sets. The RV industry ended up performing a voluntary recall and changing the axles and wheels on the effected trucks at no cost to the owners. Many of the RV companies chose to cease operations instead. The RV's built prior to 1985 and the 1985/86 RV's that were serviced under the recall have full floating axles fitted with 6 bolt dual wheels but the heavy duty 5 bolt front wheels on the front. 1987/88 versions of the RV's have wheel adapters and different spindles & brakes to accept the 6 bolt dual wheels on the front. Most/all full size RV's have a "pass through" cab with a portion of the roof and rear of cab removed to allow passenger movement between the truck and coach. Many of the RV's have been converted to pickup trucks by removing the coach and either replacing the cab with a conventional hilux pickup cab or fitting the roof and rear of cab from a regular hilux. This is one reason that you may see a pickup with full floating duals on the rear.
Toyota ceased supplying the RV industry with truck chassis about 1992.

The original 1 ton is as shown. Single rear wheels on a heavy duty axle housing. Later manufactured cab and chassis trucks were fitted with a full floating axle and dual wheels. The duals do not fit with a pickup box. The 1 ton truck is not a DLX. In fact my 85 1 ton simply has vinyl floor cover and vinyl bench seat. No radio, no power steering and no A/C. The 86 in the photo has vinyl floor cover but cloth bench seat. It has power steering and factory A/C.
In addition to the items I listed above - the 1985/86 1 ton has heavy duty 5 bolt rims and heavy duty brakes. The heavy duty brakes include the use of a different master cylinder.
