Can I make my door locks automatically lock when I start driving?

I try and remember to always lock my doors once I get underway, but I occasionally notice that I forgot and it bugs me to no end. Is there a way to set the locks to automatically lock when I start to drive? (And definitely not automatically unlock when I stop - that would bug me more!)

I've got a 1999 4runner, base package with remote keyless entry.

on the real though, My dads 99 2.7 4runner BASE with keyless..The doors lock automatically on start up...Weird yours doesnt do the same thing..

Im thinking maybe a relay between the locks and the ignition, but im not good with electrical, so hopefully someone can chime in..

Yeah, you keep popping up, Scuba. I guess the bubbles always rise to the top - whatever that means.

For what it's worth, my doors automatically unlock like they're supposed to if the door is open, the key is in the ignition, and I press the lock button.

Hmm, probably just needs to be programmed to lock that way...
I'd suggest talkin' to the dealership or some toyota workshop.

That would be nice to have.

My previous '95 4Runner w/ factory keyless entry did just that. As soon as I cranked it, all the doors locked automatically. If a door was open when the vehicle cranked, that door would not lock (even if you manually tried to lock it). When I turned the vehicle off, just the front doors unlocked. It was great...a lazy man's dream. Really missed that feature when I stepped up to 3rd gens.

Wish I could actually help with your situation. Just thought I'd let you know it is possible.

our 2000 4runner did that and i reprogrammed it to NOT do that.

we have the stock alarm and the instructions are in the manual.

i think we have a CARR system... unfortunately, i haven't been able to find the manual as i want to return it to starting/locking mode - doh!

Mine doesn't do that but all 4Runners will unlock if the key is in the ignition and you aren't sitting in the driver's seat, that's done so you can't lock your keys in the car if they are in the ignition.

If you have the stock alarm or the RS3200 Toyota alarm system, you should be able to program your door locks to engage once the engine starts.

Say that until you're the victim of a carjacking attempt. Just the other week, a woman in a shopping center parking lot (not a bad shopping center, but near the projects) near me was minding her own business when a crazy guy with a criminal history opened her door and tried to drag her out of her car.

Keeping your doors locked at all times is the best way to prevent that sort of thing.

Sorry, we dont get carjackings here.....I havent really thought of it that way. In that case go for it, most aftermarket alarm systems can do that.
