just what the title says, on a 22re in an 86 pickup. I ask because my oil leak is worse and last time I tried this I couldn't get the bolt to break loose. I'd hate to find out that I've been tightening it this whole time.

use an impact gun to break it loose. they are a PITA to break loose by hand, you have to use the starter to break it loose by hand. with a air impact it comes right off.

I used the starter trick to get mine off. Put a breaker bar on the bolt and lay it across the drivers side frame rail. Disconnect and ground the coil, then bump the starter in short intervals. Mine was loose on the first try.

If you go to this website on replacing the timing chain, the first thing they show you is how to get the bolt off the crank using the starter....

lock the hubs, put the tranny in gear, transfer case engaged, jam the brake pedal to the floor, chock the wheels, socket/breaker bar/pipe. Get er done.

The only time i deal with left hand threaded bolts is at work with turbine foundation bolts

or oxygen tanks or trailer jacks or the left side of my dad's 54 international pick up wheel studs (the right is right hand threads... )

I've never had to use a starter to break a crank bolt and I've taken many off... I took one off tonight with the engine on the stand. Though in tonights case I am rebuilding the 22r so i let the timing chain jam on the sprocket.

All you need is the truck in gear (or some way to keep the crank from turning whatever method you use) and a breaker bar and some muscle. I've never seen one so tight it wouldnt come off. Get a longer cheater bar! =)

oh and its threaded normal.
