I was on hard dirt about to cross a pipeline trench that had a spot where dirt filled the trench so I could cross.

Then yes sounds like they are bad. Look at the boots on them and see if the grease is coming out-thats a big sign they are toast.

get 2 floor jacks
one goes under the opposite side rear axle of the cv you are changing.
one goes under the a arm the closest you can get it to the outside of the truck...
unbolt end of axle from hub..
unbolt 6 bolts on diff side of cv..
then you can wiggle slide it out.. i didnt need to undo anything eles and changed the cv in about an hour first time.. it was passenger side

when you're in 4x4, you hear a popping and a deep rumble that sounds like its coming from the front, huh? yeah, CV would be my guess. mine do the same thing, as soon as i get the money to replace em, i am. but how sure r u that your hubs are ok?

the bolt & the c-clip on the axle end (might not be a bolt, some don't have it) & the bolts around the axle flange (under the truck). The rest is holding your mouth right while you wiggle & cuss & try to line them up with the cut out's on the flange & wiggle some more.

Personally I just popped out the studs with a c-clamp & ground off the splines, now my cv replacement only takes a few minutes for both sides to be done; still a pita but not nearly as bad as before.

Yea the popping and rumbles comes from when I turn in 4x4. Sometimes it even pops and rumbles when the wheel is all the way to the right or left in 2 wheel drive. I have 2 new cv's to put in and I'm gonna give it a shot today hopefully.
