22re burnt oil smell

I have a 22re in my 89 toyota 4x4 truck. I have been smelling burnt oil when i get out of the truck after driving it. I have not seen any smoke out of the exhaust and there are no oil leaks anywhere on the motor. Cant figure it out.
Any suggestions?

was the oil actually burning or was it just leaking?

If it's burning oil then you might have bad valve seals. If not, maybe even piston rings might be worn out. You can check either way by doing a compression test. All the cylinders should be close to each other in compression.

The guy i bought the truck from said that the motor has been rebuilt and only has about 40k on it. If the rings were shot, wouldn't it be smoking. Ive been followed and they said they saw no smoke at all! Ill do a compression check though.

A compression check would be my net step; sounds like a little blow by. How many miles on on that rebuilt motor roughly?

Pedram88 is right as well. If the guy just did a basic rebuild of the block but didn't mess with the head and left the valve-train alone, the valve seals may be the culprit.

mine does that too, its just cause of the grease/oil/gunk on the motor. My 77 did it, I washed the motor off at the car wash and it went away for a month or two (77 leaked oil baaaaaad)

I did a compression check. Here is the results.
1. 150
2. 140
3. 120
4. 140
Could be blowby. Might just have to build up a new motor for it.

Well, I personally would say their close enough not to worry about them; #3 is kind odd, but still in what I would call a good range. Can you see anything at all underneath the truck that looks like fluids leaking and traveling back to the exhaust? If it's got a skid plate, pull it off and take some some time look'n and what I like to call "finger swabbing" to see if you can find any oil leaking from of on anything at all, if you haven't done so already.

I would go with valve seals as well. I had that problem after the first oil change in my 86. Then I blew the HG the next day. Bought a new head, cam, alt, radiator,hoses... the whole damn truck has been replaced. God I hate the po. What I would like to do to him.....

You can get a tool that will hold the valves closed. It goes in in place of the spark plug. Then it is just a matter of loosening your rocker arms so that you can push them to the side. Then you have to take the springs out to get the seals. Some one please correct me if I am wrong. I would save it for a weekend that you have free.

I don't know but I do know that you can get oil past them. Have you looked at your PCV? When I redid mine No3 cylender was the worst. The whole intake port was caked in oil sluge for that cylender.
