i already searched! 255/85R16
i have been searching for about an hour and cant really find an answer to my question. i want to go with the 255/85R16 but how much will my MPG's suffer? i have a 2.7, 5 speed, x-cab, 4wd. tacoma. i am not completely sure on the gear ratio but it seems very low. also, does cooper make a discover STT, repeat STT, not S/T in 255/85R16? thanks for the help.

I think the only tires in 255/85-16 (approx 33x10.50) are the Trxus M/T, BFG MT, and Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT. The STT is not available in too many sizes IMHO.
There is no real way to determine what your MPG will be - what do you get now?

This probably won't help too much as I have a 4Runner with the 3.4 and it is automatic. But I recently switched to the 255/85/16 BFG MT (going up from a street 265/70/16 tire) and have only lost 1 to 1.5 mpg. My speedo also went from reading fast by about 4 percent to reading slow by about 4 percent.
I've guaged my MPG on mileage from my GPS so I know it is accurate.

When I switched from 265/75/16's (street tread) to 255/85/16 BFG M/T's I went from apprrox. 420km(262mi)/tank to 375km(233mi)/tank, but once you figure in the 8% my speedo is off now it's really 405km(251.6mi)/tank. So it made a difference of 15km(9.32mi) per tank. For every litre in the tank, I drive .25km less (270 yards) I also found that with the Mud Terrains I drive a little slower, so that will make a difference as well. This is all based on a 3.4L Auto though, so your results will differ, but this will give you an idea. Yours, I think, will be a bigger difference (less mpg) in the city (more stop and go, only 4 cyl, so they are working harder to turn the tires) and less of a difference (more mpg) on the highway (only four cyl means less fuel burned to maintain a given speed) Overall, I'm very happy with these tires. They are awesome offroad, quieter than expected on road, and much taller visually than a 265/75.
Edit: your 5 speed will help negate any power loss, and help you manage gas usage as well

i was getting between 22 and 23 mpg with 90% of my driving on the highway. i would love to have the 255's but lately i have been driving 137 miles round trip a day for work. at $3.25 a gallon i can use the gas mileage but want the bigger tires. if there will be only about 1 to 2 miles a gallon difference i can handle that for the larger tires. but i can not go from 23 to 17 (for example) driving that far everyday and still be able to justify the larger tires. does anyone think that MPG would drop this much. if nobody has any experience with this setup an educated guess would be appriciated. thanks again.

The increase in MPG comes while the engine is under load (accelerating, hills, etc.) because the engine has to work harder to turn the larger tires. Your mileage on the highway should be pretty close to what you're getting now.

255/85r16 has to be abut the most random size in existence. You will find tire diameters ranging from about 32.5" to 33.5" and tread widths ranging from about 7.5" to 9.5". If you are concerned about mileage or not wanting to re-gear, Coopers and especially Dunlops run small, BFG M/T's run true, Swampers (TrXus) run a bit tall.
I am leaning toward a set of Cooper S/T, but the decision changes daily. If you are willing to go with 265/75 you get a lot more choices, but that is a shorter, wider tire. The 255 only buys you an extra 1/2" of ground clearance, but I am interested mostly because it is narrower.
