odometer reading ?

my son is looking at a 2006 tacoma with a odometer reading of 3000 miles. i think it is low from some of the things i see like tire wear. does anyone know as a fact if the ecu stores the mileage or not? i can ask the dealer to check the ecu if it does. i know some high end cars store it.

I would run a carfax report. Is it a one owner I assume? That does seem really low and unlikely. PM littlerunner, he works for a Toyota dealership and is the service manager. He should know.

Carfax is a good source, but not always accurate. Does the owner seem like an honest guy? Not trying to stereotype, but....well, ok I am trying to. If it's some punk teenager kid, then I'd be leery, but if it's some old guy that drove the truck for home projects and such, I'd be more at ease.

As far as the ECU question, I doubt that it's stored, but I'm not 100% sure.

I would say if it makes you doubtful at all, walk away. $20,000+ is a lot to gamble on.

I can't speak specifically to the Tacoma, but most vehicles with the digital odo's, the mileage is actually stored in the read-out itself. Usually it will all be integrated into the gauge cluster, so maybe the guy got a new gauge cluster recently?

It should be a digital gauge cluster....would be kinda hard to roll back the miles. It should be stored it the ecu. Maybe he was hard on the tires. Is this from a reputable dealership?

all digital odos the milage is stored at the cluster unit itself, you can unplug one of the connectors going to it, and it will not log milage at the same time not register how fast ur going or a swap out a cluster easy way to do odometer fraud at the same time good luck.

I would test drive it and get it inspected. Are all 4 tires worn or just the front ones? Got any pics? 3000 miles on a 1 year old truck is low. My wifes 3 year old CRV has only 11k miles on it. Tires still look new though.

i checked with the dealer and they said that the ecu doesn't store the mileage. only the cluster stores it. i think we will pass on it. thanks for the reply.
