'99 4Runner O2 sensor plug - how the hell do I get to it??

I searched the forum, but couldnt find anything specifically related to my problem.

I have the new OEM O2 sensor and gasket in hand. I have broken loose the 2 12mm nuts. The plug end of the wire is above my 5spd tranny, and I am unable to get my gorilla mits up to it. I can just feel it with the tips of my fingers.

Am I missing something? The wire on the new sensor definitely looks long enough to reach up to where the plug is, I just cant get to it.

Anyone been in this boat?

Thanks for any help.

Did you use Bob's writeup? http://www.4runners.org/writeups/02sensor/index.html

Taken from step 1: "A good tip: unfasten the 10mm bolt which holds the 02 sensor plug as shown in the picture below. This will allow you to make more room for your adjustable head rachet as well as allowing you to easily unclip the 02 sensor harness:"

I think that might help you out. Check out the full writeup though; Bob does a great job putting those together.

I have a 99 5 speed with CA emissions cats and a front A/F sensor that I had a hard time disconnecting. I know exactly what you are talking about.
I fought with that connector for a long time until I finally realized how to grab it and then I was able to get it loose. After 30 minutes of torture I finally looked at the downstream (after the cats) oxygen sensor's connector which helped me to figure out what I needed to grab to pop it loose as the connectors on mine were the same. Once I realized how the connector worked I was able to separate it by feel. I can't remember if I did it with one hand or while hugging the trans. I hope this helps, if you have big hands you are at a disadvantage for this job! Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am heading out right now to try to tackle it. I will look at the rear plug to figure out how it comes apart. Hopefully I can do it by feel.

Thanks, Hodag

I thought of going through the console, but I just got it accomplished (sitting here typing with dirty hands).

I took the sensor loose from the pipe and shoved it up between the tranny and tunnel. This gave me enough slack to get the plug over the top of the tranny where I could get both hands on it. I looked at the rear O2 sensor plug to get an idea of how it came apart and reached up on top of the tranny and did it by feel.

It was alot easier to put the new one back in. Now I just need to go test drive it. Hopefully I'll be able to see a small boost in MPG. I need all the help I can with $3.50/gallon gas. Im at 130,000 miles and there is no indication that it was ever replaced by the PO. So I was a little overdue.

Thanks for all the input.

I have a 99 with 96K on it--my MPG is really not that good, less than 20 all the time.
I replaced the 02 sensor/fuel filter/plugs/cleaned MAF, and seafoamed the heck out of it only to gain nothing in MPG that I can tell! Oh well at least I know its got a good tune up
