Fitting a bigger spare in the stock location
I have been running 33 x 12.50 tires and the spare did sort of fit into the stock location but bearly and it bothered me the way wouldn't raise up all the way. So I decided to make it fit properly:
The whole thing will unbolt from the truck (4 bolts each side), so I took it off and cut it in two:
Some angle iron fits nicely into the top slot:
Welded back together:
There is also room to move the raising mechanism back about an inch or so. I did this to center the mechanism and help minumize stress on it. (had to drill a few new holes)
Painted and bolted back on:
The spare now goes up all the way:
