I've installed a new JE, Inc 22R/RE head in my 87 Truck (w/22R); I’ve installed it twice now & have encountered the same problem both times. When I crank the engine the head gasket leaks combustion pressure into the cooling system and eventually out of the gasket seam. 1st time I used a Felpro gasket and new head bolts; 2nd time I used the gasket JE provided and new head bolts from Engine Builders. I’ve checked the head & block for trueness and they are both within spec. Here’s what I did in preparation:

    1. Cleaned all old gasket materials from the block. The block looked pristine when I was done.
    2. Thoroughly cleaned out head bold receiving threads and wicked out all fluid
    3. New head clean when installed
    4. Counted head bolt rotations when installing to ensure all went in without interference & torqued to 60 lbs

Additionally, the EGR valve assembly was clogged, so I’ve cleaned that out.

I’m stuck at this point…any suggestions you can give me?

    Pete
