Audiophiles chime in....how is the 10 speaker JBL synthesis system?

So..I'm looking into getting a 2006 SE 4x4 V6 4runner and I see you have the options of 6 / 8 / or 10 speaker JBL systems. How is the 10 speaker 5.1 Synthesis system? I'm a huge audiophile and I'm wondering if I'm going to like this 10 speaker system or just figure out a way to get some aftermarket goods instead of the jbl 10 speakers system....haven't quite figured that part out yet.

Thinking of maybe just taking my 2 12's and my 2 tweeters and mids from my 97 sr5 and putting in my 2006. I wouldn't have a center speaker or back door rear fill speakers...just my tweeters up in front and my mids at the doors and then my 2 12's. Should get the job done...but not quite sure yet how I want to do this.

Um ... don't take this the wrong way, but if you're a "huge audiophile" you know the answer to this question... Take some music you know really well (preferably from a variety of different genres) and listen to it critically:

Is the sound well-balanced between bass, mid, and high?
Is there good extension on both ends - lows and highs?
Does it sound like you're at the performance?
Is the stage wider than the car?
Are the performers placed realistically on the stage, or lumped together?

heh...ok yea...figured that one.

I mean.... 5.1 surround in car...I mean common...do you really need it? to up-mix a 2 channel stereo sound to a 5.1 would be emulation and emulation is nothing close to an actual cd encoded in 5.1 surround....so yea...guess it wouldn't be worth it.

They were right about the JBL system. Get the lowest you can, and upgrade.

Look into Eclipse head units.

As for speakers, it's up to your budget. I am tossing around the idea of Dynaudio, CDT, Macrom for the components.

Some companies I had in mind are proving to be somewhat difficult to be found and had for a decent price. Ground Zero Audio being one.

Well this is what I'm probably going to do...

I will be transfering my 2 DEI Comp 12's over...along with my DEI 1,100D Mono amp and my DEI 250x2watt Stereo Amp...and my CDT HD 5.25 and tweeters with crossovers. and then look into the Eclipse CDC8455 (i think thats what its called)

should be a great SQ system. Don't need any rear fill. bleah..screw the passangers this ones all for me. Besides..if I really need to..I could always upgrade..with a 4 channel stereo amp and such.

HOwever...I fear loosing the steering wheel volume controls so if I replace the stock unit I will have these useless controls on my steering wheel. Kind of lame. ANd would I loose keyless entry too?

what do you think?

5.1 is actually not a bad idea in a car. While what you are saying about the emulation is true, in a car you don't have the luxury of sitting between the speakers - you are always closer to one than the other. Using a center channel can greatly help generate a realistic sound stage across the width of the car and provide the same good sound in both seats. Back in my competition days, I used a 3.1 setup (no rears - it was a std cab Toyota pickup after all) with a 6.5" coax (JL Audio VR) in each kick panel and the center of the (custom) dash with some auxiliary tweeters near the a-pillar on each side. One JL 8W6 in the dash provided more than enough bass extension.

My competition rig was Clarion, Audiocontrol, and JL Audio. I heartily recommend all three - especially JL. I used a wide variety of amps (Orion, Soundstream, USAmps), I liked the USAmps the best, but all the others were "cheater" amps wired down to 1/2 ohm, so it was a whole different situation. We did the cheating a little differently with USAmps... (they custom built an Xterminator 5500 in a VLX25 body for me, so it only counted as 25W instead of 500W...)

The biggest advantage to doing it yourself is having the installation flexibilty to aim the speakers properly from good enclosures.
