Looks unnecessarily heavy....

But its good to experiment! Don't those frames say not to weld or cut on them? Is that just while on the truck so it doesn't mess up the truck or ??

i think it would function a whole lot better and offer more protection if you mounted it vertical instead of horizontal...mounting it horizontal like that means you will have to add even more metal to protect the rest of the grill and such..

epic bumper.

and i think that semi-frames are hardened steel, so welding on them weakens them significantly, but i cant be sure.

why would they be hardened steel? those frames are meant to twist like crazy.

a frame section from an 18 wheeler?

dude, that's some sick resourceful fabbing there my freind!

what kinda of desk destroys a bumper?

but I guess the REAL question is, why, or rather how, did you hit a desk?

they are highly ductile and have a "spring" to them so subjecting them to the intense heat of welding makes the steel hard and brittle. Not a good choice for front end protection....

here is a link to how it looks now.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...selman/Bumper/

im pretty sure its going to be plenty strong enough. as i am going to be adding braces and such.

i do have to cut a hole or remove the skid plate section i have. (kinda keeps the truck a little on the warm side.)

thanx for the comments guys. keep them comin!

its intersting cuz you fabed your own bumper which i wanted to do at one piont but i dont know how to weld, lol ( going to college for that ) lol but i was going to use i believe its tubed steel, ( what they use for role cages, and such ). But in my opinion it prob works for you but it looks goofy lol id remake it and use idk what kinda metal they use for the arb bumpers or like smitty built bumpers but id use that metal. I had a friend custom make one for his truck ( rear bumper ) and it wasnt super heavy or antying but was really strong and he did a great job! ( KUDOS ) for fabing it yourself!

!
not an issue of strength through "braces and such", its the strength of the steel itself after welding on it. Your changing the grain structure of a highly ductile steel completely when welding, thus creating a very brittle steel where it has been welding making the joints very weak as opposed to the surround metal.
