Stronger CV Shafts

Does anyone out there know of a company that makes severe duty half shafts for the 4Runners?

thanks guys, would you recommend the upgrade? Running 33s at the moment, 35s soon, and locked up front.

I have not done the upgrade and probably wont. I have a locker in the front and (so far) have not had any problems with it. Once my driving ability gets better than the IFS can stand, I will be going solid axle. But That may be a while. I thik my IFS works great for everything I have tried so far.
I have heard that 35s are the max size IFS can take. I think you are risking major breakage with that size, depending on what you do.

Why polish a turd?

You start pushing anything over 33's on the ifs stuff and your better off making a nice fire with your $$

I have heard that the CVU's aren't worth the $500-$700 for the pair that they cost. That is one upgrade I won't do.

Think about it. You make the new CV 40% strongen than stock. How strong is that really?

How many have you trashed so far?

Forget about the stronger than stock crap, save your money. Just get some replacement axles, and go with that. I have broken 3 ORS axles (which are supposed to be stronger, yeah right). So, now I'm back to the Taco V6 Manual hub axles.

I have only broke 1 so far, but i think age had more to do with it than anything else. I'm just going to keep the stock CV's with the warranty. works for me and is a whole lot cheaper!!

the CVU axles come with a lifetime free replacement warranty too, i am interested to see how far i can push these. i would have never spent the money on them either but the guy i bought the parts from to do my manual hub swap did!

The only problem with they're warranty is you may have to ship them back, then they'll ship you new ones. With the local parts store's shafts, you break them, take them off, go to the parts store, and you get new ones...

anywhere that i will be that i might break one i will want to have a spare one with me to get home. that isn't an issue. plus, try finding a toyota cv shaft in stock somewhere when you need one. last tellico trip there wasn't one with in 200 miles except for a spare that someone had with them.

i don't know how much faith i would place in the ones you can get from parts houses anyway, there are several board members who have had bad experiences with those. ask paul bratik what he thinks of them.

Claiming 30% stronger than stock is a big claim with no practical gain.

A reman'd is a crap shoot, but a cheap one.

I sure would not invest in aftermarket CV's if I was breaking only once in a blue moon. If I was breaking regularly, I would get CV"s off the truck.

The parts store I go to doesn't only have remaned... they also have new shafts, price difference is only 40 bucks more. I can get them same day too. (Warehouse has a bunch and is in the same city.)

thats what i do when i snap one, take it back to autozone for them to replace. just carry a spare on the trail. get yourself a good pair of snap ring pliers, and then grind the splines off the 6 bolts holding the shafts to the inners. i also dont use the bolt and washer inside the hub, just the snap ring holds it in place. that way its just a matter of removing the 6 nuts holding the hub on and then it comes off.

changing a CV shaft for me consists of:

unbolting and removing locking hub
removing snap ring
removing 6 CV to inner shaft bolts
removing whats left of CV shaft.

put the new shaft in
put 6 bolts in
put snap ring back on
put hub back on

thats about as fast as it gets

I haven't checked into this much, but since a couple of you have mentioned that you carry a spare on the trail: are both sides the same? If not, do you carry a spare for both sides? can you run the truck without a shaft to get you back to base?

I'm interested in that too. I think you can run youre rig (1st gen IFS and maybee 2nd gen) without the axle, but I think the 3rd gen has to be replaced before it can go on.
