I'm thinking of getting a Tundra 4x4 V8. What year is the best. ( I won't be dropping 40 grand on a new one.) Is the double cab roomy? Is the extra cab roomy? How much can they tow (In real life not what the specs show)?
What kind of milage can a person expect to get on the highway? Auto or Manual???
I just want to ask those who have them before I decide if I truly want to get one.

well, that depends on what you want it for. I have an 03 TRD ext cab and I love it. its got good power and it has plenty of room for what I need it for. I dont really tow with it but you can tow some trailers, just not the really heavy one's like toy haulers and stuff like that. Also I get about 15 city and 17-18 on the highway for gas mileage. any other question just let me know

I picked up an 06 quad-cab and it's sweet. I just hate having to worry at times if people are going to be careless and ding the truck. If it wasn't brand new I wouldn't care so much. Good luck with your decision.

I have an 05 DC, plenty of power, reliable, (duh toyota, lol). I get about 14-15 mpg, but thats also with winter gas and lots of city driving. I get about 16-18 mpg on highway driving.

Pre 07, the models are as follows, smallest to largest

Reg cab, access cab (with suicide doors), double cab (4 normal doors)

My DC is really roomy, everyone I drive around loves the back, they always say, wow, it's so much bigger inside than it looks. And it's really comfy back there. Plus the pre 07 DC has the rear window that rolls down, like the 4runner

I have a 2002 Tundra SR5, 4x4, access cab, V8, auto. The access cab is not for long road trips for passengers. It is great for the 'junk' that I need to carry around. The V8 has had plenty of power for everything I have needed it for. I pulled a car trailer with a 4Runner on it, and it worked fine. It makes the 15-18 that others have claimed. The rear springs are too weak for any heavy loads, but it does have a great ride. I have 90K miles on mine with no problems, and have been very happy with it. Hope this helps with your decision.

Another comment, my 05 DC is so comfy that my family wants to take it to Myrtle Beach this summer instead of our 01 Honda Oddessy. It's great for long road trips. (I have a feeling my Mom wants to go antiquing with my friends mom, so maybe thats why she wants to bring the truck, lol) But I would be sure to test drive the truck, I have heard taller people can be uncomfortable for long trips, I'm about 5'11, and I never get tired of driving it

My advice would be to keep searching if you want the DC. I don't know your price restrictions, but I got my DC for around $24k, and I have heard people getting them as low as 20 or 21. You just have to keep searching I was on autotrader almost every day for about 2 months.

I have an '01 TRD LTD, access cab, 4wd, V8. I love it. The access cab can fit two large adults, but not very comfortably, it fits kids no problem though. I have towed a yota pickup and a 4runner on a trailer behind it (separately of course, haha) and it tows well, I had no problem at all. I love the power of the V8 and I love how much space there is inside. (I owned a tacoma before this)

You can only get the V8 in an auto, just FYI.

The only problem I have had with mine is that the exhaust manifold appears to be leaking. I will have to replace it. I think this problem was solved on the '03+ Tundras. I have heard that there were some towing related tranny issues with the '00-'02 Tundra's.

One minor complaint, more like me whining really, is that I like the center console in the '03+ tundra better.

I own a 2001. The V8 is great. I have 78,000 miles and have had a number of braking problems - I had a rear wheel bearing go out a few miles ago and it seems like I'm starting to have transmission problems. I really like the truck but am starting to 2nd guess my purchase and I'm a die hard Toyota fan.

FYI: there are a number of problems with the 2000-2002 models - mostly brakes and transmissions. From what I've read HEEPS have the same transmissions.

I have a 2001 limited and i love it. Ive put it to every test that a truck coulde handle like pulling a trailer full of railroad ties up a muddy road, where my bosses 2500 ram couldnt. maid it up a snow covered trail when a fully locked 84 couldnt, and pulling out the 2500 ram because it was to heavy for the muddy roads, just some little brake proms, but its paid for so i can spend some $ on better brakes
