W56 transmission for 2wd trucks?

I have an '88 2wd pickup that currently has a W46 4 speed. I changed the diff to 3.72s so now I need a 5 speed. I have a W55 out of a parts truck, but I really like the low 1st gear of the W46 with the 3.72s, which I will lose with the W55. I have done a lot of searching, and it appears there are 2wd versions of the W56, but I cannot seem to find one or what they came in. I am thinking 1 tons, but I am not sure. Does anyone know for sure?

What kind of work is involved in swapping the 2wd tailshaft to a 4x4 W56? If I decide I want to try my skills at rebulding a transmission, can I swap the W46 lower gears into the W55 or put the W55 5th gear into my W46?

I am under the impression that if you have both transmissions you can swap gears between the two. Though it may take some trial and error to get it perfect.
I had thought that the 2wd w58 out of the 22re powered celicas had short gears and bolts up in place of the w46.

Thanks for the input. Although I have not found anyone that has done it yet, my research has found about the same as you said with the gear swaps. The W58 is geared closer, but higher. I really like the lower W46/W56 1st gear with the lower rear end gears I installed, so that is why I was wanting a W56 or the R155 that I talked about in my other thread. I am thinking what I might do is try to find a cheap enough 4x4 W56, tear into that and my spare W55 and see how the parts line up.

From what I have found 93 is the only year were they have documented using both the W55 and W56 in the 2wd, also the year they apparently started using electronic speed sending units.
