The engine did not blow, it still runs great; just with what sounds like rod knock. Speaking of rod knock, I did think recently that the sound could also be related to a piston taping a valve, which would be awesome if that is the case.

It's pretty easy to work on the 22re. I have a non-ac single cab now and i can grab both motor mounts with my hands. Even the bellhousing bolts are visible under the hood

I don't think it would be running good if the valve and piston are coming into contact usually means stuck valves or timing is out not to mention the lack of compression on the cylinder.

well, if you think that might be the issue, start there. compression test it. if you have low compression, you know your problem. get a bore scope and scope the cylinders to see if theres any scoring on the piston face. also, if theres a bad bearing, you should be able to see the metal in the filter media, have you torn your filter apart and looked yet?

High compression piston could contact and if the contact is light there would only be marks on the piston face. compression is spot on and I have not pulled the filter or done any work to since I parked it. Either way the engine must come apart. I is a nice thought if it is not a bearing

not necessarily, keith. if the contact from valve to piston is light enough and no damage has been done, you could probably do what i did and get a thick cometic MLS head gasket and ARP studs. you wouldnt need to tear into the guts of the motor then. id get a borescope and check it out, because that something we could knock out in a day in your driveway, not the garage.
