Very clean install btw.
That's the cd changer control thingy. It was where the cb is now and I'm planning on cleaning it up to look a little better. I left the box around it to protect it and used a dremel to make the box fit in the space. Velcro holds the cd thingy in and the ashtray is still usable for receipts and junk.

I figured it was something like that... it looks good down there but be careful about slosh-over from cups in the cupholder splashing down on the face plate...

of course you couls avoid that problem by using only sippy cups I'm sure the stoker would be willing to share his with mommy...

Ha! My 6 year old with a sippy? Oh, there'd be mortification for sure.

...stupid in-dash cup holders. Slosh always ends up on my leg or the shifter boot. Have yet for it to hit the dash.
Yet.

So took a road trip, saw a lifted, stingered tube bumpered red Toy pickup on the side of 55 (I think it was), visited the Chicago Field Museum, camped in a couple of inches of snow at Chain of Lakes SP, went to Wisconsin and then went home with a little more than I left with...

96 3.4 m/t
99 3.4 m/t, locker Pretty clean, was an Arizona, then Texas truck, first so spent most of its life out of the salt belt.

Yep!
I decided to replace the Explorer (a/t, 3 timing chains with plastic guides that fail, ball joint drama, meh driving experience) with something a little more reasonable.
Won't be doing much to this one, it's got the tall springs and locker already. It'll get a tad bigger tires, the gold emblems will change to a darker color, a switch for the antenna, maybe a cb and some little things like that.

Wow! I'm impressed you found a 99 3.4 with a manual... I did'nt think they even offered a manual after 95 those things are so rare... around here at least...

That was a lucky deal!
I've thought about "borrowing" the locker, but may bite the bullet and arb the blue one in lieu of leaving the 99 mostly unmolested.
Decisions, decisions...

It was finding the combination- m/t, lower mileage, locker, etc- that hadn't spent most of its time in the rust belt and fit in our price range that took a few months. We found a few ads but every time I called or emailed the truck would already be sold. There's some rust underneath, but it's pretty clean and immaculate inside. The guy I bought it from took good care of it. Kudos to my husband for actually locating the craigslist ad. It's ours but he'll drive it more than me, after all, my truck never breaks down like his temperamental Volvos.

(darn it, now I've jinxed myself)

That's not a nice name to call your husband...

So when you were at the Field did you go to see the Ghost and the Darkness?
were they as scary as the narrator claimed at the end of the movie?

He got home yesterday and noticed I'd removed one of the stickers on the side and said
"Oh good, you got rid of the stick---"
"HEY!"

I love my husband.

We were there from 9:30 til close and didn't see the movies. We saw the mammoth exhibit (cool) and the diamond exhibit (meh) and as much of the rest as we could cram in. I like bones and animals and rocks and we checked out the indian stuff (no Chickasaw, urgh) and of course, Sue.

I've been giving the cb antenna mount some thought. I like that it's tucked behind the truck but want it higher and don't like that I have to bend it out of the way to open/close the tailgate.
I was inspired by a 2nd gen cb antenna thread and decided to put mine in roughly the same place, above the taillight.

After some measuring and testing I found immediately above the taillight was the place. Easy enough, trim the taillight so the bracket fit. The coax already comes out into the taillight housing, it was easily re-routed up top rather than down toward the bumper.

The biggest issue was the bracket. The L-shaped bracket fit vaguely where I wanted it to but faced forward, better enabling it to catch on things. I did a little bending with my vise and bfh and a little more until it was a good fit and facing backwards. It can still catch on things, but not as badly this way and it fits much better. The tailgate opens and closes without interference.

I notched a shallow channel in the top of the housing to route the coax out to the antenna. It wasn't really necessary but I liked for it to have that 1/8" more room. It's wrapped in electrical tape to protect it from rubbing, though I did smooth the cut out.

Are you gifting me that sweet sweet bumper of yours???
(Should I look you up if I need to buy a second bracket or are you like me and hang on to everything?)

The bikes are sideways because I'd loaded up for tonight's ride but decided to work on my bracket some more while I was waiting for the hubby to get home. We did Creve Coeur to St. Chuck tonight. We figured it's still too wet to ride dirt. I'll admit a little jealousy but you won't see me riding the tandem down the steps!

can't really gift the bumper at this point....but i'll let you know if it ever needs a home~!

yah, i hang onto old parts - lemme know if you need another bracket...as i have ZERO use for this one!

right on re: the ride....at least you rode! Steps were cool...the line to the JUST left of the ceder is one of my faves - basically get out of the rock garden and you don't TOUCH brakes until the 90 degree corner! YUS!!!

i'll be riding tomorrow - commute to werk....maybe some CHUBB after werk!

You know hab if you got a 90* coax connector you would'nt need that drip loop flapping in the breeze by the light. You could set up a nice clean straight line back above the light... just sayin'...

The Ghost and the Darkness is an excellent film worth full theater price IMO and worth renting/buying the dvd. I would highly recommend it... it might be a little scary for "the stoker" but still worth seeing.
According to the movie the Lions behind the story are supposed to be on display at the Field Museum.
