Toyota 4Runner VIN Code explained---I need codes for 1996, 2000-2003
Guys,
I found this chart in a tech sheet I received so I put it into a chart form for those of you who are extremely bored but curious what all those numbers and letters mean:
http://www.4runners.org/articles/vin_code.html
If you own a 1996, 2001, 2002, or 2003, can you post the alphabet code for ref code "j"? See the chart to see what I'm talking about.
Thanks,
Bob

My 1996 is JT3HN87R3T0043862, so if I'm counting right, 1996 = T.

I think the 03's are a little different than the chart
in the link. Here's what I know about my VIN
J - Japan
T - Toyota
E - ???
B - 4x4 (Z is 2wd)
U - 6cyl (T is 8cyl)
14 - SR5 (I think Sports are also 14 & Limiteds are 17)
R - ???
5 - check digit
3 - model year 2003
and the rest are the build sequence.

guys,
thanks for the replies. kerrs, that link was very interesting. i can barely make out that top line but it appears to me that TMC (Japan) has a different way of coding their vehicles than TMS USA (USA).

All the links in this thread are dead. So that's my official excuse for resurrecting, and correcting, it. That and I didn't feel like starting another thread titled "1996-2008 Toyota VIN Codes explained", since that's pretty much the gist of this one here. So...let's re-explain the situation then shall we?
Close...but no cigar!
J - Japan
T - Toyota
E - Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (SUV)
B - 4DR Truck 4WD (Z is 5DR Wagon 2WD)
U - 1GR-FE (T is 3S-GTE)
1 - Series #
4 - Restraint System/Grade #
R - 4Runner
5 - check digit
3 - model year 2003
O - Plant of Manufacture = TMC
and the rest are the build sequence.
Hint: SR5, Deluxe, and Standard are part of the Model Code(not the VIN).
This is from a Toyota Counter Reference Guide published in 2008. The info applies to all 1996-2008 Toyota vehicles.
