Torque Conv/Differential Rebuild!

Well...I took in the truck to get an inspection of awkward noises. It turns out the differential needs to be rebuilt (I had a feeling though) and the torque converter needs to be replaced.
My question to you guys is....How do you know the torque converter needs to be replaced??? The mechanic said there's a "whine" coming from the tranny. Is that a characteristic coming from a bad torque converter?
Also...the quote is $750 for the torque converter to be replaced and $1,200 for a differential rebuild.
Also.......it's a 92' 2wd pickup with the auto tranny.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!

The diff is making alot of humming and grinding noises. The mech said it would require a complete diff rebuild with new seals, bearings etc... and he also said the wheel bearing needs to be replaced as well.
