Any of you S/C experts know if there is a good way to determine if an engine has had all the required fuel upgrades? I'm buying a charged 4runner this friday, the guy tells me it has had all the neccesary upgrades but the owner before him did them. the s/c has 50k on it, is that evidence enough?

That engine had about 40k SC miles on it with all the fuel mods and instrumentation.
What do you know about fuel mods? Do you know that there are basically two forms, a) the TRD 7th injector and b) larger injectors in stock locations? If so, then you know that there's a piggyback controller required for both solutions. That controller is mounted behind the glove compartment. If the seller is honest, then he should let you pull the glove compartment and check to see.
Some folks will come forward and tell you that they're not running any mods and haven't had a problem. There are _possible_ situations where this will work, high altitude being one of them, but there are a lot more possibilities that make this a problem waiting to happen.

??? ditch the hood? That's my stock hood with an aftermarket plastic scoop sitting on it.
The Datsun's actually smaller than the one on the hood... fwiw, I'd blend it in if I went with it. It won't just be a cut & stick.

Woah, this thread has exploded!
I was thinking a cowl-induction hood would be a cool departure from the standard sport hood scoop... They have lots of different styles of cowls over at Summit.
Maybe something like this:

I dunno, just something different, and keeps kind of a clean look to the hood overall.

I'm thinking I might try to find a small electric fan that would fit inside/under my scoop, to blow air directly on the supercharger's body. Something small like this Summit 10" Electric Fan. It only pulls about 7 amps which is nothing, and pushes 755cfm. I could then tie it in to the variable controller with the Mark VIII electric fan I still plan on putting on the 4Runner some time in the future, and then it would just vary its speed based on how hot the engine coolant was. More food for thought...
EDIT: Or this one puts out 1250 cfm... also 10" diameter.

I haven't sifted through this entire thread, but has anyone mentioned some heat-dissipating vents? I am thinking something like the AMG SUV hood here...
Maybe even some functional vents above each header would work. Thoughts?

Alternative to the hood scoop
I saw an ad in one of the 4WD rags last month. This might be a good alternative to the scoop...I am thinking about this versus paying the $$$ for the scooped hood mod.

For those interested in the basics behind this idea... 
As I mentioned in another thread, air moving over the top creates a low pressure area that will suck air out of the engine bay through a properly placed vent. This can be explained using Bernoulli's principle, where high velocity air creates differences in pressure.

1. When high-speed trains pass each other, they must slow down or their
windows will be broken. Why? Will the windows be pushed into the train or
sucked out. If you are standing near a high-speed train, will you be pulled
toward or pushed away from the tracks? [The fast moving air between them
lowers the pressure so much that windows will be pushed outward by the
normal air pressure inside the train which is now so much higher than the low
pressure outside the train.]
2. Are insects squashed directly on the windshield of fast moving cars, or do
they rupture in the air and then splatter on the windshield? [As the air is
accelerated up over the hood and windshield the pressure becomes so low
that the bugs actually rupture because the pressure on their insides is
greater than the lower pressure they are feeling on their outsides.]

Personally, I'm okay with sticking to "yo! heat rises!" and then adding on that I understand the Bernoulli Effect. Given that I'm not building a race car (though I do seem to be building a race engine!) I ain't gonna worry no matter much about the specific shape of dem exit ports outta' ma hood. I gonna just go fer looks and have at it with a cuttin' wheel.
