$700 for a Toyota cat sounds like a pretty good deal. And you're in CA, no getting around that. Aren't emissions inspections fun? Glad we don't have to deal with that in VT.

What does your muffler look like? Is it ballooned out or wrinkled form heat? If so, the baffles and packing may be blocking the outlet causing excessive back pressure.
Remember the line from Beverley Hills Cop "I'm not falling for the banana in the tailpipe!"
Is it crushed from wheeling

i was quoted $745 for my truck, but i work at a toyota dealership, so i get a discount. before the discount i beleive they wanted $1,155 for the cat. but that's for a standard fed & canada spec cat, not CARB spec

So today I went to a local muffler shop (Michael's Mufflers) in san jose. Told the guy my best guess is the cat is clogged but im not entirely sure. He says well lemme shuffle around some cars and lets cut open your pipe and have a look. If its not your cat or exhaust I'll just weld it back together no biggee. Keep in mind its 300pm on a thurs and he has got a shop overflowing with vehicles. I'm like hell yeah this is awesome. He cut open the pipe and showed me that both my cats were clogged and both would need to be replaced. I was in a hurry because I had a Dr. appt in an hour so I asked if there was a slot tomorrow he could fit me in. He says I'll have it done in 30 min no need to come back tomorrow. He was done in 20 min sending me on my way. This guy was just so awesome I couldnt believe it. Never tried to upsell me anything just what I needed to get back on the road and have my runner back to normal. And now it runs like a champ. If I decide to get a new muffler I can tell ya where Im gonna go

I remember having a badly cracked distributor cap that caused much the same problem. It was cool to open the hood and watch the blue sparks racing around. Didn't run very well though. I replace it after I got tired of the light show.
