Bad pumpkin

First things first don't blame a nation for the practice of a few slackers.Lets not forget we have quite a few in our history and plenty still living and many yet to be born It's good old boy arrogance to think that way.
This is some basic info from a black smith I spoke to the problem starts at the foundry in the smelting proses when either improper amounts of additives are used or all of the contaminates aren't removed this can cause rust to form inside the steel plate and make a weak spot and yes this even happens here in the good old USA.
I have been dealing with the same problem with 01 runner over the last four years it started out as a pin hole turned in to a 1/2 " hole so I pulled third member and axles plugged off the axel tubes cut out the cancer leaving a void that was 1 1/2" wide and almost 7 1/2" long welded on a 1/4"x2"x8" strap over the void left in my pumpkin cleaned out the pumpkin and reassembled worked great

PS. TOYOTA wont admit a thing untill someone gets hurt! Its not like a sticky gas peddle or a bad computer

I just try to keep some paint on my frame and use some high content zinc primer for rust inhibiting.

fightman- JW how do you tell when you have an oil leak on that thing?

So last summer mine was leaking. Wire brushed and sanded the rust down to metal found 3 pinholes just below fill plug. Jb weld and undercarriage paint solved it. It started leaking again last month. Used a wizza' and man are parts THIN. Jb welded again. I'll check it out tomorrow and maybe put on another layer. Anyone in massachusetts that'll cut off the old cover and weld on a new fab'd one?
Pictures coming...

After 1st coat of jb weld

Here's a PC once the 2 part was applied. After 20 min it started slowly making jb weld icicles off the bottom of cover. Had to kind of lift all the goop back in place. I used a lot!

Sorry for the flood of posts but here are some more photos from my first attempt at solving the leak. It lasted 11 months to be exact! A couple hours and about $25 (including new gear oil).

As far as I can tell this is a very limited problem.

I have been trying to buy a rusted out housing for quite a while to see if this would be a feasible way to repair these on a exchange basis.

Every one wants to sell me good ones

If I was closer I would love to repair this.

One has to blame the EPA for this wanting higher and higher fuel mileage weight gets cut where it can.

For those of you saying this is a Toyota only problem, you're just flat-out wrong.

I used to work for a Toyota/Ford dealership and I have seen way more rotted out Fords than I have Toyotas.

I think New England killed it. The parts were thin because I wanted clean metal for repair. Funny thing is everything above the fill plug is solid. Second coat of epoxy went on this AM and the bonds look great.

No I doubt it not any worse then other places in the great liquid brine belt.

The back of the housing was just made of thinner metal to cut down on weight.
