2.7 is a good motor ... but if you're thinking about 33" tires then change your gears to 4.56 or 4.88.

Me, I would stay with 31" or do some inner front fender redecorating and install 32".

I have a 4 cyl. in my 2000 4runner, aint no shame in my game.
Hey I took what I could get, 4runners are hard to find. (I dread those days on the autotrader!!)
My 2 cents is if you live in an area with a lot of hills, stay clear of the 4 cyl. But where I live the only "hills" are the bridges. Better gas mileage, nice simple engine, I'm happy. And yes the speeding tickets are a huge factor with me, sooo glad I have the 4 cyl.

I'm waiting to see if anybody starts doing some mods on the 2.7s. I bet with some headwork, cam, big bore throttle body and a K&N filter charger kit you could get pretty close to the same HP as a stock 3.4. Add to that a 30lb flywheel for getting the bigger tires turning and a 4cyl would be a nice little motor for a 4x4. Keep in mind though, that the heavy flywheel will slow you down on the road somewhat.
Heck even stock, 150hp is nothing to sneeze at unless you are wanting to impress chicks and get tickets

Im running 33's with a 2.7. Course Ive got the lightest of the available rigs too. Its not bad enough for me to consider re-gearing. IMO top end always sucked and now it sucks just a little more. I run 4th gear alot more instead of the usual fifth. My little intake & exhaust and electric fan mods have helped some. Id be interested to c if a header would help my top end enough and not lose out on the low-end. Im sure I can spin the tires over Im just worried about slipping the clutch. I get about 18 or so mpg, Im sure Id get better if it was all highway. my $.02

Some of the best off-road Toyotas that I have seen all ran the 22re. All off them liked the weight difference of the 22re and the power that it can put out if the right mods are intalled. I had a 22re in my 88', after a TRD cam, intake, and exhaust I was able to beat my mom's 95' 3.0 off the line and down the highway. Her runner couldn't even come close to catching me. However, I have the 3.4 now and I would have to say that it is by far the best Toyota engine I have driven. The only reason I would want the 22re back is the gas mileage 23mpg v. 16mpg.

i'd kill to have my 25-30mpg that my little 22r gave me again. the dauntless little 20r, while nearly indestructable, only gets around 15mpg. i always thought it was because my rings were shot, but the general consensus on marlin's board was that the 20r on average only gets 15, even in good shape

i'm definitely going to do an engine swap this year...thinking either 20r head/22r early block hybrid, a late model 22r, or a 22RE with a late model upper plenum

I don't keep track of mileage...but opening up the intake (I have the K&N FIPK) and putting on some headers (NWOR) have helped quite a bit.

The NWOR headers help on the low-end...and the FIPK helps on the top end (if I had to do it over I would've just done the deck-plate mod).

Those two mods almost make up for my stock 3.58 gearing. (which I would change in a heart-beat if I had the funds)

If you really want some performance stuff...check out these guys...

They only make stuff for Toyota 4-cylinders.

How did you you guys get such good mileage from a 22re. The one I had got worse mileage than my 3.0, and that was with headers and electric fan. My sister in law still has my 93 with the 22re. She drives all highway miles and never gets over 16 MPG. My 3.0 gets16-18, wifes 3.4 20-22, and my 95 Tacoma 2.7 got 22-24. One of the reasons for the 22re's bad mileage maybe that I was always flooring it to go up the mountains or keep speed on the highway.
I had some LC engineering stuff and it is very good quality. The ceramic coated headers have been on for 4 yrs and not even a slight discoloration or rust.
The 2.7 is a very good engine. If I lived somewhere that was flat I may still own the Tacoma with it. It is one of those engines that I bet will easily go 500,000 miles with little maintenance.

I couldn't agree more.......

I have 255k or 150k miles and this 4cyl engine is amazing!!! Lacks power which drives me nuts but my buddy who convinced me into buying it said Yota's 4cyl is bulletproof.....so far he is right!!! I am thinking of giving it to my fiancee and getting a 6cyl though.

The thing about flooring it all the time......very true!

I purchased my 93 pickup with the 22re, 5speed Jan 03 I am currently getting 20-23 MPG (moderate lead footing) and that is the reason I only looked at this combo when I purchased

BTW I sold a 98 Dodge Dakota 318ci, 4X4, 5speed 12-14 MPG (extremely heavy lead footing, )
