Which o2 sensor?

First I want to introduce myself. I bought a 99 4runner several days ago with 218,000 miles. Very clean and well maintained. I have been lurking on this site gaining knowledge and finally signed up so I could ask this question.

I was driving today and the cel came on. code p0133 bank 1 sensor 1 o2 sensor. Now here's the problem I cannot tell if I have California Emissions. I will attach a pic of the tag under the hood. From the tag it looks to be California but I only have 1 catalytic converter. and the exhaust looks completely stock. So how can I tell for sure which sensor to order? The markings on the original are: toyota 89465-35530 denso 0640. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have a picture of the sensor in the vehicle, but not one removed. I was wondering if they physically looked different. The pictures I see online show the A/F sensor to have just a couple holes on the sensor itself, and the O2 sensor shows to have a bunch of holes. I may see if autozone can order both Denso sensors and I can bring in my old one to compare. Also I was wondering about the P0133 code since it specifically states O2 sensor and not A/F. here is a post I found on another site from someone with a similar problem.

"Yeah, there is. Page DI-216 of Vol. I of the '99 4Runner FSM. P0133:Heated Oxygen Sensor Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1) (Ex. CA Spec.). Note that the OP has a '99.

You couldn't have this with an Cali.type A/F sensor, I believe, because on a Cali. voltage is set by the ECU and the A/F sensor causes the current to vary. This code would mean he has a 49-state truck, and needs to change his front O2 sensor. Other causes are air induction system, injector, fuel pressure, or the sensor wiring."

i called autozone this morning to see if they could order me both sensors. The california is a special order and has to be payed for first and takes 1 day to get it. They ordered me the non california without pre paying and it will be in today. I will take my old one off and take it when i go to see if they look the same.

I've got it figured out. I talked to a friend and he showed me right on the sticker under the hood. It shows exactly what type of system it has. On the top left in the engine family section it says HO2S(2) meaning it has 2 heated oxygen sensors. Air Fuel sensor vehicles would say something AF.

If it truly is a Cali-spec 4Runner, it should definitely have two cats.

I fought this battle on my '99 for the better part of a year before getting it resolved.

You can always call your dealer, have them run the VIN and see what comes up. This may be the only way to really find out how it came from factory.

It looks like a normal O2 sensor from the picture so yes, i think it is safe to say you have a Fed truck, pretty sure that is what the bottom part of that tag says as well.

Yup, should be as easy as counting the CAT's. Of course I managed to mistake it on mine, but I never actually looked to count the cats, just assumed.

Check out this link for the part number look-up, it appears to be very accurate.

in my experience, its not cali as a cali would have to cats, you need the o2 sensor. I have the same sensor on my 99 limited. I just got one today and i installed in like 5 minutes. a tip, spray the nuts down with PB Blaster and let it sit for a minute and they will come right off.

Yes, that's a 49-state '99. The Cali. label has "CAL & OTC" where yours has "FED & Canada" and in the white space in the box there is language that starts: "This vehicle conforms to California Regulations..." and goes on with a lot of other Cali. BS. I have a '99 Cali'(bought new in NJ). It's also correct that a '99 Cali. CAN'T throw a P0133, per my '99 FSM.

I would like to thank everyone for all the help and thank Toyota for making the O2 sensor in a very accessible spot. Probably easiest I have ever replaced. I installed the new denso and drove a few miles and the light went out. Probably was the original O2 sensor with 219,000 miles on it.
