Long cranking
I have a 97 toyota tacoma with the 2.7l 4 cylinder.Mileage on the engine is unknown previous owner says it should have around 80k.Engine runs good, regarless of the mileage.
So, here is the problem,If I leave the truck sitting for more then 10 minutes it takes about 15 seconds of turning before it fires.Anything shorter then 10 minutes and its an instant crank up.I have done a pretty good amount of research of what could cause this.As some of you might have read in another thread of mine I have a camshaft sensor sitting beside my valve cover.I left the truck at a toyota shop in town over night for him to take a look at it.He said he knows exactly where it goes.So I asked him to put it back in for me.I come back this afternoon to look check out the progress and he shows me where the the hole for the sensor has been capped off.He then started to explain that this sensor isnt gonna change the way the truck runs in anyway shape or form its just a back up to the lower one.He gave me the option of him putting it back in but it was gonna cost about 120+ since I have to buy a new sensor so I said forget it,if its not gonna change anything why waste the money.
I asked if it has anything to do with the long start and he said not at all.He starts naming off some of the things that could be causing it.Injectors could be leaking down, fuel pump going out, leak somewhere in the system where it loses its back pressure.
So now I want to figure out what the problem is and fix it.I have checked all the lines for leaks and I have none. The fuel filter as replaced about 4k ago it did it before this was replaced.I replaced the coolant temp sensor aswell.I want to check my fuel pressure but how do i go about doing this?Im pretty much set on sending my injectors out and getting them rebuilt just gotta come up with the dough.
can you guys give me some idea of what to do?

This sounds like a heat soak issue. Components that usually dont get hot while the engine is running are heating up after its shut down. Check maf and iat sensor, split in a vac line could be expanding.
Any smoke? Checked compression?

I have a similar issue, just not as extreme and mines the V6. Before removing the injectors and sending them in, I wonder if you could pay to have a leakdown test to see if they are even leaking.
Things that I feel could be related are: ICV, MAF, Temp sensor, leaky injectors, weak fuel pump...
My MAF was cleaned (dealer), I R&R'd the T-body and cleaned that and the ICV, changed plugs, wires, fuel filter, and ran fuel injector cleaner through tank. It all helped a little, but the problem still exists. Mine has 167k, so I attribute some of the issues with that.
It might be worth it to pay and have a diagnosis done before shotgunning repairs.

Check the compression of the cylinders. My 97 3.4 will take longer to crank when it is cold, and at 183k on the engine I blame it on worn rings. I bet this is also why it comsumes a quart of oil between changes.

Nah no smoke at all but when it does crank when it does the long cranking it smells flooded, like straight gas.
I have not done a compression test yet,Where is this icv sensor yall are talking about?I have cleaned maf and that did help a ton.Replaced coolant sensor didn't change anything.
Ill have to check into the leak down test as I have no experience what so ever with injectors or even the idea of how to do it haha.

could an 02 sensor do this? The rear 02 sensor is busted i know for a fact but was told by a few shops all the rear one does is turns the check engine light on.
is this correct and would it have any effect on the starting?

I have a 3.4 that does something along those lines.
Truth be told i just don`t have the time to check things.
What i do is turn the key on and wait till the radio turns on at this point it will fire right off like yours if it is only for a few minutes shut off it will fire right off

My old Ford is cold blooded; so I changed the fuel filter, fuel line gaskets and injector o-rings still cold blooded. Took it to the mechanic and he told me to save my money and drive it. I am considering actually paying for a tune-up and diagnostics. Fuel pressure and leak test is probably my next logical step.
