I can grab one next weekend when I'm back home but it has the double u joint cardan at the front (transfer case) and a single u joint at the rear (diff).

After reading through older posts it seems like no one has had any luck finding replacement u joints for the double cardan part.

Has anybody had any luck with replacement rears that have a single u joint? There are quite a few pictured on the web (assuming the picture is correct) and since I plan on keeping the truck for a long while I wouldn't mind shelling out the $400.

I have extended heavy duty drive shafts from daves offroad performance (http://www.davezoffroadperformance.com/store/) both front and rear, both are setup with just 2 u-joints, one at the t case and one at the diff. both work perfectly fine, no problems at all and very beefy, i would highly recomend them, easier to maintain and cheaper apparenty.. lol
But if you order one from them expect to wait 2-3 weeks for it to be built, balanced and shipped. thats my only complaint with them

Have you ever greased your u-joints? From the pic, I'd say no.

I have more than 244,000 miles on my 4runner (purchased new) and grease all if the fittings every 10-15,000 miles. The u-joints all feel solid at this point.

No, I have not. And I think I've learned my lesson now.

I did find one in a local scrap yard that came out of a Runner with less than 100k and it's only $150 so I think I'm going to go that route.

Check it for any slop before paying. If it looks good, grease it and ALL of your other fittings until grease starts to squeeze out of the seals.

grab one out of the yard i say, ur shaft only moves in 4wd so its not like its going to wear all the time unless your wheel daily

I have an '88 toyota truck with a 22RE engine and automatic trans. While putting on an exhaust system, I noticed transmission fluid was leaking where the drive shaft goes into the trans. I shook the drive shaft and it has alot of play up & down and side to side. I wonder if its a rear output shaft bearing or a bushing or what??? Also, how difficult is it to fix and can anyone tell me the step by step procedure to do it myself?

My 93 yota need thats same u-joint replaced in the rear. I bought mine at oreillys for $15 with a lifetime warenty. Just need to put it in now.

Could be as simple as the flange nut being loose, try tightening that up as a first step, almost identical to the pinion flange:

This is assuming you are asking about a 4WD.

Its the front of the drive shaft going into the trans. It is loose and not the u-joint.

Pull the front drive shaft and check the output flange nut like 4crawler suggested...you are gonna have to pull it anyway to inspect u joints/ cardan joint/cv joint...

I dont see the big issue swapping ujojnts. Yes, the cv ones are more difficult than the non cv joints. But its not too bad. I maybe spend 5-I0 minutes tearing one down, i actually have a pile of ifs front shafts i have to dissemble/clean and re joint, (20 shafts)
I do work at a Driveline shop though. Lol

As far as replacement joints go i do not recommend aftermarket ujoints. I have seen way too many of them break or whem installed have a lot more end play than a factory set of ujoints. Just my. 02 cents

An an important thing about the cv assembly when taking that apart it is important to inspect the ball socket for wear, and when re assembling it it is important to know you didnt drop any needle bearings inside the ball socket

I just came back from NAPA and I was told that they are available (u-joint-three for the rear) $27.

Not sure what run around you were getting?

Speaking of that "ball socket" in the CV side, is that replaceable? I've ripped both my front driveshafts apart on my 86 and managed to loose most of the needles. I'd like to just get a replacement "ball socket" but I'm not sure if it's replaceable or serviceable. Are my shafts "trash" now?
