I don't think it really needs to be removed but if I was going to DC my exterior, I'd rough up the paint with some sand paper then acetone it to get any oil or residue off and go to town painting it. IMO it's still alot better than LineX'n the outside.
Everything I've painted with the DC stuff (skidz, sliders, bumper) has started as bare steel so I really don't have any experience with DC'n painted surfaces.

BTW: I know the local RhinoLiner dealer here and it's dry and ready for use within 5-15 minutes after spraying (depending on temp. & humidity of course). Says it's about like melting plastic with fire and letting it drip. Dries like that. I can't imagine lineX being much different so I think it's crazy that they need it 3-5 days. Maybe that's with bodyshop prep time (you know, etching).

I am thinking to do the same thing too. But not the body, just a set of limited flares and rear bumper that I plan to spray with the duplicolor liner. I think it make sense that you will have hard time doing body work in the future.

I use Dupli-Color truck bed coating on my sliders, it's more like a thick paint and does wear off and chip easily. Usually when I stop by WalMart, I buy a spray can of the stuff, to touch up my sliders after a weekend run, but I'd never think of using the stuff on my rocker panels, no where near as tough as Line-X.

To throw out another idea, I have scratched the surface on Durabak. Sounds like the best DIY application and way cheaper. Lots of colors and options to match.
I have been quoted 4 bills for rockers and below the seam on my 95. I have also been told black is the only thing that has guaranteed color holding. The reds, which are of interest to me, turn pink over time. I do not dig the look of red with black, but for some of you with darker rigs, it may not be an issue.

I plan on going with it just on the underside not up the rocker panels. and as my truck sees more snow than anything, I'm not to worried about body work. it will be completly fresh when it gets coated. and line-x and rhino lining can be sprayed pretty smooth. you just have to adjust the gun just like theDC. I have used Rhino lining on a friends tacoma and it sticks very well. is a little bit flexable and fairly smooth. and since he had no worries about rust he put the toyota rubber mat back in the box for a clean look. I luckily have 2 brothers in law who are starting a rhino shop soon so it should help with the price.

I had linex put on mine last year. A Rhino dealer told me it would take 2-3 days to be put on, linex took half a day with prep included. They did an outstanding job, I was amazed.
Linex dries faster so it will have a uniform thickness when applied to the rocker panels. I was told Rhino liner takes longer to dry and might not have a uniform thickness when applied to rocker panels (i.e., it might sag). That is what I was told... not sure if its true.

Whoops...I missed several more ports in this thread!
After some thinking, I believe that having a professional install will suit the proces better. In looking at how much work is involved, what I want to do is a pretty big task and having it done professionally is the way to go. So I'm gonna go w/ the original plan...probably in the next month.
I've dug around Line-X's website and only found one image of a fully covered truck...thought I'd post it (even though it's a Ford).

PM WolfpackTLC, he used some roll on stuff when he did the cargo bay of his 80. He said it was pretty easy to do and not too hard to work with. The local liner shops wouldn't garentee they wouldn't f'up his interior so he decided to do it himself. Saved him a bunch of money and it looks darn good. I want to do my whole interior when I turn my truck into a trail rig a few years down the line, but as 89 said... thats when I have money to burn.

I talked to the Denver Line-X dealer today and asked him for a rough estimate (without measuring my truck) on what it would cost for them to Line-X the exterior of my 91 4 runner. He guessed around $1200 and that depended on the masking time and material used to cover it. I imagine if I'd do alot of the prep scuffing myself and take some things off the truck (bumpers, tire carrier, corner markers, grill, etc) before taking it to them I'd be able to save some money but not all.

A buddy of mine rhino lined his whole cab. it looks real tough and he has no worrries about scratches or breakin limbs with his rhino lined truck. Its cool. just do it.
