Help me plan my lift & tire upgrade (retitled)

Okay, first off... I have to say that the Wrangler RT/S on my 02 (the ones that came with it when I bought it last month) absolutely blow arse. I need to upgrade stat, but I know I'm going to lift this vehicle. I'm just not sure I'm going to be able to lift it before I start cursing the tires!

Plan thus far is tundra coils in teh front, 2.5" OME in the rear, 1.5" 4Crawler lift, 1" diff drop. I saw a dude running 305/70/R16s on the stock rims with roughly the same lift, plus some 1/2" wheel spacers. I've got no problem running the spacers, but am wondering how something that wide on the stock 7" rim would handle when aired down?

Basically what I'm after is what's the widest I can go while still at stock ride height and still maintain the ability to air down the tire (no beadlocks, this is my DD.)

As well, should I be looking at a whatever/75/R16 or a whatever/70/R16?

So much to do, so little time, so little good weather, and not enough money :-D

Perhaps I just to the 1.5" BL and then get the tires?

stock height, I would run a 265/75-16. otherwise, wait till you have all of your lift in order if you really want the 305's. you just need to decide, how soon (or later) you want to put the lift...don't buy new tires today and put your lift on in a month then blow money on new tires because you don't like the way it looks.

The way things are playing out I'll be doing a 1.5" body lift sooner than the full suspension lift. the 1.5 should be a good start to the mods, it'll make way for the 2.5" OME lift. With 1.5 on the body, and running 1" wheel spacers, can I get 305s (If I choose to go that big) on the stock rims? Maybe I just step down to a 285/75/R16 or 295/75/R16 running only the 1.5" BL and 1" (maybe .5"?) spacers.

Those tires should be plenty even after I put on the OME 2.5" rear lift and tundra coils in the front, I'd think.

someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the 305's would have way too much rubbing. I saw a recent post where someone ran 285's with the same body lift, so check his thread or pm him to see if he has rubbing issues. the 285 tires are common to run on the stock wheel but I have seen very few run a 305 stock, so I would rather let someone who has that setup comment on that.

The 305's seem really wide for the stock wheels. I just took a look at the BF Goodrih site, and they recommend 8" - 9.5" wide wheels. Using a 7" wide wheel could be asking for problems. The 285's recommend 7.5" - 9" wide, so it's a little closer. As for them physically fitting (height anyway) a 1.5" or 2" BL should let you run the new tires no problem. I just put on 255/85/16's with only a 2" BL and only had to trim the pinch weld a bit, and they are 0.2" taller than what you're looking at. Width-wise, somebody else will have to chime in.

Yeah and I'm totally backwards on understanding metric tire sizes. The crap is confusing. I thought I was just going wider by going to the 305. the 31" tire is fine, I think 32s would be fine too... don't want to go too big as this is still my daily driver. Ignore what I've got in my sig, I think teh 1.5" 4Crawler body lift and the Tunrda coils in the front seems like a decent plan so far. Maybe OME 890s in the rear. Will happily run a wheel spacer if needed. I'd love to blow the $1000 on the sonoma steel #7 kit, but I can't do that... yet.

I guess it'll be body lift only + new tires (These just barely passed inspection, no skin off my nose... they suck) for a while. I'm not doing anything super hardcore yet, but I wnat to ready the truck for the summer. Am debating making a run clear the hell out to Utah and the white rim trail at Moab, ala this:

Metric sizes can be confusing. The 305's would be wider (12.2") but also taller (33") If you want to stay below 32" you've got a couple of options: 265/75/16 (31.8" x 10.5") or 275/70/16 (31.2" x 11.1") But there is no reason you cant go a little higher in height, like to a 285/75/16 (33" x 11.3") and still have it be your daily driver. When I went up to 255/85/16's (33.3" x 10") I saw no drop in mileage, but that will depend on where you drive and how hard. All my commuting is on relatively flat highway, so a taller tire that makes less revolutions to cover the same distance actually helps mileage.

As well, if you do go with 265/75/16 or 275/70/16 you won't need the body lift. Many people run 265/75's with no mods whatsoever. I actually bought my truck with 'em. And because the 275/70 are a shorter tire you should have no problems. Oh, and all the measurements in this post are from the BF Goodrich A/T's

That trail looks amazing. As much as I like trees and mountains, the more I see of the desert the more I want to go. Hmm...maybe we should go visit my wife's uncle in Scottsdale Az...

Yeah man, go for it...

It's a great trail. I'm saving money for the trip but maybe it could be turned into some sort of yotatech super-duper run. that'd be awesome

Today was interesting. got my ass good and stuck, had a guy in a YJ jeep pull me out... not after hitchhiking a ride with a snowmobile out to the main road!

I gotta start carying a f'n shovel!

Now i'm glad to be out of the middle of nowhere and tossing back some beer.

The 265/75/16 sounds like a good plan. You think teh body lift is worth doing with them or is it uneccessary.

expect to run .5 inch spacers with stock wheels with 285s or 295s. some rub with 295s on 3" sus and 1 inch body. might want to think about it first.

With 265/75/16's the body lift isn't necessary. Depending on the tires you go with, you may have to do very minor trimming in the pinch weld area, but that will only be with mud terrain tires, as the extra tread makes the tire slightly larger than an all terrain tire.
