Since when do they require a smog check at certain speeds, i just did a smog check on my blazer last week and all they did was park it and rev it. They had the dyno looking machine but didnt put my truck on it.

Well I would guess that your blazer is AWD and cant be tested on a 2 wheel Dyno. All of my cars and truck with the exception of my fj40 have had dyno runs for smog checks.

i just got my smog check less than a week ago.
i too live in california, and hate smogs... i have a couple questions
is your 4runner made and bought in california? if so i think it might have some extra thing on the engine. if not, maybe that accounts for something
i have 31'' tires and i passed my smog with flying colors? i waited till AFTER smog to do seafoam, in case of the check engine light.
MY TRICK: run a tank full of CHEVRON low emissions gasoline, run it on the freeway before to warm everything up, and you should be golden..
after all ive passed for 13 years now :]

First off, NO CARB CLEANER on the MAF. Only electrical sensor cleaner.
Second, if it is due to a lean condition, you might consider replacing your fuel filter as well. Anything that restricts fuel flow or makes the computer run lean is something to look for. A new thermostat might help too.
I am due for a smog check as well. Not looking forward to it. Just about as much fun as a prostate exam.

i hate smog checks they always take forever and leave you in the prayer position the whole time hoping its gonna pass. Then when you see PASS its *sigh of relief* ...hopefully

If you have to go to a check only station, and you meet income requirements, the state of California will pay up to $500 to get your vehicle fixed so it will pass. Or they give you the option of retiring your vehicle, and they will pay you for it. Good to hear you passed, though.

the place i go never puts it on a dyno or revs it they just check it at idle and tell u its good and never had a truck fail yet (knock on wood), guy said he can usually tell if its going to pass by the smell when u pull up

I had high NOx and a new pre-cat o2 sensor was the fix. This was on my '97 runner with stock gears and 285's. As others mentioned, tire size should not be an issue.
Pretty sure the same thing happened on my '97 T100 (35's), but that was a while ago so I can't quite remember the details.
The o2 sensors just seem to wear out after a while and then they tend to run lean.

are you kidding. didn't pass because of wheels/tires. i have the stock alloys with 265/75/16, basically 32"s and i can't pass the 15mph nox. but it passed when i bought it and it had 16x8 rims and 305's. but they did it at a lower rpm. maybe that is my problem.

Swapping o2 sensors
Does anyone know if I can swap out my O2 sensor from my 2000 4runner into my 97 just to get past the smog?
Oh, and I do have one of those code checkers, but the check engine light isn't on in the 97 that failed smog. Might there be useful codes in there even if the light isn't on? I had high NO at 15mph, 25mph passed ok.
Update: My 2000 is dual cat with two sensors, the 97 is single cat and I only see one sensor.
