Custom LED switchback turn signals (w/ pics)

Updated 11/29/10

I decided to take this project to the next step and make my parking lights into turn signals, thus the "turn signal mod". I don't believe anyone has done this mod with LEDs yet, but I will say I am happy with the results. This project was somewhat of a pain because I had to bake my corner lights in order to get the lenses off, but I'd say it was all worth it. Anyway, I made a new video to show off everything now that it's all done. Let me know what you all think. Click the Youtube logo to watch it in a bigger window.

HD video - Custom LEDs

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys, just wanted to show you all my newest project. I already had custom amber LED turn signals, but now I've added some white LEDs that basically function as a DRL (with off switch of course). So the white LEDs are on all the time, but they turn off when the turn signal is activated, and it alternates between yellow and white while the signal is on. Once the turn signal is off then it returns to white LEDs only.

HD video - Daytime

I built the amber LED array quite a while ago, and all I did this time around was add the white LED array to the same board, and using a relay to switch the white array off when the turn signal is active.

As far as parts go:

60 amber Lumiled superflux LEDs (30 per side)
32 white Nichia superflux LEDs (16 per side)
8 47-ohm resistors, for white LEDs (Radio Shack)
12 resistors, for amber LEDs (Radio Shack) *Can't remember the rating on these
2 SPDT mini relays
Perfboard (Radio Shack) cut to size

Here is the wiring schematic (courtesy of AZDave on HIDplanet):

Another video and parts list posted above ^^^. I'll try and do a write-up on this soon, but it probably won't be terribly detailed.

I learned everything I needed to know from the HIDplanet.com LED forums.

Very Nice!
Did you paint the board silver or was it silver already?
Looking forward to the right up...

Some of the info folks will be looking for is how to mount the board in the housing, soldering tips so they don't cook the LEDs, how to connect the board to the light socket, other ideas/warnings. Things like that.

When you order LEDS make sure you get amber LEDs if they ship you blue/red by mistake and you install them the local LEOs will be all over you for impersonating an "official vehicle" or some such similar charge.

Thanks for posting up a very cool mod.

Yeah... the superflux style LEDs have 4 legs, which fit perfectly into the perfboard. I just soldered them together on the backside for the connections.

The board comes the same color as you see the backside is. I used some "chrome" spray paint and it's been holding up really well. I'll try and get to that write up soon.

Main thing is that it takes some looking to find quality LEDs. Philip's Lumiled and Nichia make nice ones, along with CREE. Beware of knockoff brands.
