Angry bad igniter or other ideas?

I Changed plugs and wires today (all Toyota parts). Reconnected everything (wires, MAF, and vacuum hoses) and tried to test drive it. The truck turns over, but dies before it actually starts running on its own. I plugged in my Auterra OBDII reader and got a P1300 (igniter circuit malfunction). I re-checked my connections and everything appears to be as it was prior to today when it worked fine.

So logically I've been searching for information about the igniter going bad and how to test it. I've found some posts, but all of them deal with earlier models and almost exclusively the 3vze. As it appears to be well known, a new igniter is somewhere around $350+ shipping, so I would love it if somebody would let me know of a way to test the igniter.

Really any ideas are welcome.

I saw some posts that had aftermarket injector stuff, or aftermarket starters. I am 100% stock 5VZFE 3.4L auto and stock Toyota VIP alarm/keyless system.

I seriously doubt your igniter (or anything else for that matter) went bad in the 1/2 hour you spent changing your plugs and wires. If it ran fine before you worked on it, it really sounds like something was left disconnected/connected wrong. Are you sure you routed the wires to the proper cylinders and they're all plugged in to their correct coil packs?

I totally agree with what you're saying, but I've checked at least 3 times. My plug wires were the first thing I checked (been there before). They are supposed to be 1-4, 3-6, 5-2 right?

I'll check all the wires again when I get home, but until then I'm looking for more ideas.

Check your connection at the coil/ignitor. May be a bad wire too. Swap the old ones back on and see if its the wires

If I remember right on mine there is a wire that gets grounded to the igniter mounting screw. Make sure it has good contact with the body in the engine compartment. I suggest removing any paint in that spot.I don't know if this applies to your truck. Mine is a 22RE

Good luck.

Just a thought, what kind are the new plugs and wires you are using?

They are Toyota, so I think NGK or Denso. I'm not 100% though.

It worth checking. Only use Denso K16TR11 or NGK BKR5EKB-11 plugs. The wires you should be using (if you're not) are Denso #671-6182 (or NGK TE66 if you like blue wires). For now I would do what ScottyC said and swap your old wires back on to see if that takes care of it.

If your plugs/wires are not those part#'s, get the right ones. Most if not all other plugs will not run efficiently and many fail and burn up in our engines. Disconnect and re-connect everything that you touched and make sure the wires are on good (sometimes it's hard to get the 3 wires to fully "snap" onto the top of the coil packs). Good luck!

I got the parts direct from 1sttoyotaparts.com, so I was confident they were the right thing. I checked anyway before I started pulling things apart again and they were indeed correct. So I removed the igniter, unplugged it, and removed the intake tube as well as the vacuum hoses and MAF plug just like I had done before. At this moment I realized the value of working on the car when you're not exhausted from 2 toddlers and the inlaws visiting! Check out the attached to see where the problem was.

I certainly felt pretty stupid once I found it, but by feeling the connection last night it felt ok. Oh well, truck runs great. As always I appreciate the help.

I have a 1994 Toyota celica and was driving down the rd. And it just quit running . It turns over good but want start. I have replaced the dist cap because it had a ark across the top burnt all the way through. So I replaced the rotor it also had an ark the only thing left is the igniter right?
