Damn Newbies..

Please help!!! 99 4runner 3.4 failed emissions due to high Nox. EGR right? They don't sell one at Autozone, NAPA, O'Reilly, Advanced or Carqwest. Dealer doesn't list one either. Instead they have an EGR valve temerature sensor. Special order only. Bought it. Where the heck does it go?!?!?! Does anyone have any idea? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Feel like a retard. Ive always done my own minor work & cant figure this one out. I know it lists a .3 labor cost at shops..

I'm assuming you have the 4-cyl in your runner, right, since the 3.4 does not have a EGR.

The temp sensor should be right next to the EGR valve in the intake manifold. Its a little hard to get at. There is a special tool to be able to remove it, but I used a brake-line wrench to get mine off. I think it was a 12mm. I would soak it in PB blaster for few hours first, just to be safe. You don't want to round off that sucker.

3.4 4runner does not have egr like tantacoma said. For anyone else though, the temp sensor is on the valve itself. If you dont have a check engine light for cat efficiency, you should start with a professional de-carb or top end cleaner kit. Carbon deposits cause higher compression which causes high combustion temps and that causes excessive nox. Also make sure your cooling system is up to par and you are running the correct heat range spark plugs
