that's good news. So the 2000 t-case ECU should align pretty easily with the 97 harness. If both vehicles have the same engine, speed sensors, ABS, transmission and locker option - and the AWD (for lack of a better term) switch is on the t-case shifter it *may* be just a matter of rethinking the way the driveline status is indicated (sidestepping the light on the instrument cluster).

Well the trigger is pulled.

going to move the multi-mode case from a 2000 limited with 4.30 gearing and rear e-locker into a 1997 SR5 with the same specs.

I'll post details as this project progresses. As it stands now ill be doing the physical swap myself in the New Year, then taking it to a nearby shop with a Toyota master tech on the payroll.

first test will be if the 97 with the new case can be driven in RWD to the shop without any issues. I don't see why not, although I expect the instrument cluster to light up like a Christmas tree...

Well if he is a Toyota Mechanic he will probably have access to this EWD, but just so you can see the complexity of the wiring and how the ABS relates to 4WD, see below and let us know how it goes.

Update: This swap DOES require the driveshafts from a 99+ 4Runner Auto. The MM transfer case flanges sit 3" further back relative to the original T-case, therefore the rear driveshaft must be 3" shorter and the front driveshaft 3" longer than on the 96-98 auto trans trucks. On the upside, no modifications are required to the crossmembers or frame.

Sorry I don't know how this would apply to a swap into a three-pedal 4Runner.
