No, it pretty much happened all of the sudden, and then started getting steadily worse. I think most of it now is better, but I still have to kick the throttle to get it to go down to about 1000. But it atleast kicks down to where I can shut off the engine w/out it dieseling.

Oh yeah, I lubed that puppy up. But the butterfly moves left and right. It wobbles in the throttle body, and b/c of that, won't close all the way and keeps the idle too high. I think I am either going to need to buy a new throttle body, or rebuild this one.

I would think that would be a really weird thing to happen to a throttle body since the tolerances are so tight. So, you're saying that it slides back and forth to the right and left?

Yeah, it moves a good 1/8 to a 1/4 of a inch. It has actually scored the inside of the throttle body a little bit, and I think it's catching there. I can pull on the throttle cable holder away from the throttle body and it will go back to normal idle. So I know it isn't a vacuum leak or anything like that now. So I need to figure out what to do about it.

If it is really moving that much something doesn't sound right.
Did a bushing fall out or something?
Sounds like a part is missing.
Can you take a pic so we can see what you are looking at?
If it is scored like you say then I would just scour the junkyards for another one off a tacoma or 4runner.

I'll second that recommendation, but I find it really hard to beleive that it happened all at once, since wearing down like that is something that obviously had to occur over time. Oh well, happy searching for a new one!

Well, now that I am officially up the creek w/out a paddle, anybody know where I can get one? Well, other than the dealer? Maybe a used one? Anybody? Anybody?

There's a local place here that works only with Toyota's. It's called White's Auto, I think. They are located in Vonore TN I beleive. I could probably get you a phone number if you'd want it. They have a tone of toyotas, that's for sure.

There is also a place in CO called Yotayard.com but they may be a bit pricey.....call and ask.
There is also a 99 4runner being parted out on yotatech so check that thread and send Jim an email for a price.

It was in a rollover so that would be ideal for your case!
Side note.....next time there is a possible vacuum leak you can hook up a vacuum guage to a port on the intake and if it reads less than say 20-22 at idle then it is time to start looking for a leak.

I actually found one!
Well, I searched and searched, checked at the dealer ($514 cost, $750 retail) for one. Couldn't afford that, went to ebay and found someone who had a 99 with parts. Bought everything (TB, AIC, and something else don't know what it is) for 125 incl. shipping!! Anybody know if the TB for the 99 and 96 are compatible? I would assume so, it's a 3.4L, I assume they use the same TB. I know it's late to ask, but I had to act fast, 
so I didn't loose it. If it isn't, I'll post it here and see if anyone needs one.
