i've never been able to get a concrete yes or no whether the carrier is the same as a regular V6 one. some say you can install an arb or other lockers, others say you can't.
from what marlin says about these strange diffs, is that they're actually technically better. having a thinner ring gear is less rotational mass, and a thicker pinion head is always a good thing. toyota has no carrier breaks like a dana axle so all the gears have to be made to fit stock housings, at least for the most part

Wait, wait, wait...everybody needs to specify whether they mean front or rear. I get the feeling some people are talking about the fronts while others are talking about the rear.
RobG, do you still have the factory 4.88 gears too?

Is that the one you are thinking of selling?

The one I may be selling is my original factory 4.88 3rd (including the gears all set up) and this one does have the abs hole. I just swapped it out for a non-abs third with 5.29s and an ARB.

i think im on the right page with this gearing thing, the question i have is: on my 86 & 89 the gear codes are g292 which tells me they are 8"/4.10/2 pinion, am i able to use those to regear to 5.29's to fit up the 33's to go with the auto tranny? from what im understanding here, i have to remove the existing 4.88's w/carrier to regear with the 5.29's and reinstall them. the carrier refers to the entire centre portion of the rear axles not just the 'guts'. correct?
thanks,

for axle codes please read this:
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html
some examples: G254 = G=8"housing 25=4.56 gears 4=4 pinion axle(meaning v6 or turbo rear axle a 4 cylinder is a 2 pinion)
G144 = G=8"housing 14=4.88 gears 4=4 pinion axle
G282 = G=8"housing 28=4.30 gears 2=2 pinion axle

He swapped out the third member - that's the entire removeable section, (and the differential and gears that will come out with it.) Not the axle housing. I think that's what you're asking. Here's a pic of a complete third member, clipped from Marlin Crawler's site:

thanks, i needed that
hey flamed
i guess someone was able to decipher my question! now that i know what it looks like, i can start the removal from the two donor trucks. ill get them out, cleaned up and inspected to see if they are ok. im thinking at least a rear locker as my first major mod, so at least one of the rear 3rs should be able to be set up. just have to ask robinhood/corey about the abs. thanks kindly for your help. im sure ill have more questions for you soon enough!

This thread has given me alot of info. One thing I'm wondering is how much does something like this cost? I have a 92' 2wd 3.0 pickup auto and it will probably need a new diff soon. I'm going to get bigger tires so it may have to get re-geared as well. I also hate the fact that I only have one tire spinning in the back so a LSD looks prety good as well.
I know new diffs are high up there in costs so I'm wondering how much the re-gearing and LSD is?
