3rd Gen Brake Upgrade - No more warped rotors
#202
when you pick up the parts, open the boxes and check to make sure you are actually getting the calipers you need. 2 out of 3 times the small caliper is in the box, and also 1/2 the time, the little tiny seal that goes into the bottom of the port where the flex line bolts to the caliper is missing, shine a good flash light into the port and make sure the seal is actually in there.
You can dig the seal out of your old calipers and re use it, but not if you trade them in when you pick up the new ones.

I realize this is an old thread and this topic has been beat to death, but I just wondered if this particular quote is spot on.
It's almost time for ft brakes on my 4runner and I'm wanting to do this upgrade with the 231mm calipers as they are superior to the 199mm calipers. I'm running 16x8" American Racing Outlaw II wheels and it looks as if I have more than this amount of space available to squeeze them in.
I've searched many forums and threads and the recall tsb's, looking for this exact info and I only found it here. Has anybody else confirmed this or run the Outlaw II's and the 231mm calipers without interference?
Thx for any input.

These 199mm and 231mm are everywhere on car-parts.com. Order a set of 199mm from junkyard on car-parts.com for 60bucks shipped. The parts were in good condition.
I love the upgrade.

I did this upgrade earlier tonight. Well worth it in my opinion. I could tell the difference in braking immediately. It is easily noticeable how much easier, faster and smoother the rig comes to a stop. I installed the 231mm, 13WL calipers.
Wanted to clarify something I read about this mod somewhere... You will NOT lose 5mm of lug to the Tundra rotors. The thickness of both the stock 4runner rotor and the Tundra rotor where the lug holes are at is about 6.5mm.
I found some '06 Tundra rotors and calipers off of Car-Part.com. http://car-part.com/index.htm
Not all of the vendors listed as having the parts actually have them, or exactly what you want. ie: A rotor, there's a big difference between an '06 rotor and an '02 that has 250k miles on it. So you wanna double check the variables. Being a cheap bastard (at times like this,) I wanted the newest possible calipers and rotors as the odds should be better. I scored. Got rotors that had never been cut and factory pads with 7mm of life left with all of the factory caliper hardware intact. Woot! For about $185 shipped. Got a can of VHT silver caliper paint for $8. All is right in the world.
They clear my 16x8 American Racing Outlaw II's. Not by very much, but they clear without having to grind on the calipers at all.
I machined the rotors, cleaned & painted the calipers, installed and bled the brakes in a little under three hours taking my time. Of course I had to trim the dust shield a little.
For those on the fence thinking about this or if your brakes are about due, this is what you want to do in my opinion. The Tundra rotors are noticeably heavier, thicker and better built. Speaking as a tech that does brakes everyday, the newer '03 and up 13WL calipers and bigger pads are well worth it.
